WM Senior Database Administrator - Oracle in Houston, Texas

I. Job Summary

Designs complex logical and physical databases requiring additional specialized technical knowledge, and coordinates database development.

II Duties and Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. Other ancillary duties may be assigned.

  • Resolves complex or ambiguous database issues.

  • Analyzes, designs, creates and implements complex database applications in all environments.

  • Administers, supports, maintains, optimizes, and monitors complicated database applications in all environments.

  • Plans, installs, and maintains complex DBMS binaries, patches and bug fixes. Designs, tests, and implements specific database structural changes.

  • Implements standard configurations and tools to enable back up operations, analyzing of objects, and cleaning of file systems and logs

  • Supports high availability database infrastructure including Oracle RAC and Data Guard technology.

  • Performs database Backup and Recovery in support of business continuity

  • Manages database performance and capacity, provides plans for increases and/or decreases, ensures improvements are successfully implemented and makes tuning adjustments as necessary. Coordinates with users to determine requirements.

  • Design and enforces Best Practices and DB Standards as per industry standards.

  • Investigates and resolves difficult and advanced database application problems.

  • Contributes to specification meeting with project team to determine scope and limitations of projects.

  • Maintains database schemas and data documentation.

  • Participates in on-call rotation and provide first line after hours support as needed.

III. Supervisory Responsibilities

May coach and mentor less-experienced analysts and act as team leader on systems projects.

IV. Qualifications

The requirements listed below are representative of the qualifications necessary to perform the job.

A. Education and Experience

  • Required:

  • Education: Bachelors Degree in Computer Science, MIS, or similar area of study. An additional four (4) years of related experience may substitute for the Bachelors degree.

  • Experience: Five (5) years of previous experience required.

  • Preferred:

  • Five (5) years of experience as Oracle RAC DBA

  • Five (5) years of experience on Oracle Dataguard / Standby Database and DR process

  • Five (5) years of experience on Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM)

  • Five (5) years of experience on shell scripting

  • Five (5) years of experience on Oracle DBAs Automation related tasks

  • AWS cloud database administration experience is a plus.

B. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations or Other Requirements

  • None required.

  • Preferred: Oracle Certified Professional or PeopleSoft Certified Professional.

C. Other Knowledge, Skills or Abilities Required

Advanced knowledge or skills in one or more of the following is required:

  • Design, build and reverse engineer complex multilevel shell scripting for process automation.

  • Strong understanding and experience with Unix environments.

  • Installation, upgrades of Oracle Enterprise Manager and configuration of emails, alerts

  • Experience in Oracle PL/SQL coding.

  • Experience in OEM repository database and understanding of SYSMAN schema.

  • Knowledge of database analysis, design, and maintenance.

  • Unix and Linux Operating Systems.

  • Supporting (VLB) Very large database leveraging (Oracle partitioning for data management is a plus).

  • Understands infrastructure elements including performance and tuning considerations.

  • Working knowledge of shell scripting for various operating systems.

  • Backup and recovery experience.

  • Knowledge of disaster recovery plans to ensure business continuity.

  • Understanding of TCP/IP networking environments

  • Oracle 10g or higher.

  • Experienced with building and support Real Application Clustering on Linux platform.

  • Configuring and supporting Standby and Data Guard technology.

  • Experience in negotiating issues to resolution.

D. Other Knowledge, Skills or Abilities that Contribute to Success

May require advanced skills in one or more of the following:

  • Oracle Data Replication, PL/SQL programming, Korn Shell programming, Oracle RAC, Data Guard.

  • Strong problem solving and communication skills. SQL knowledge a plus.

  • Self Motivated and multi-tasking individual that works well in a team environment.

  • Ability to build relationships with peers and customers,

  • Demonstrate a customer-service centered service delivery approach.

  • Knowledge of ERP software.

  • Proficiency with backup or monitoring tools.

  • Project Management skills and experience working in a project-centered environment.
