Kennedy Krieger Institute Assistant Teacher I (LEAP-Greenspring Campus) in Baltimore, Maryland

Overview

The Assistant Teacher will support the teachers who serve a varied population of students with disabilities. The staff member assists with the implementation of the program as outlined in the IEP of each student. This staff member assists with adapting instruction that meets the individual academic, medical, developmental, and technological needs of the students.

At the Lifeskills and Education for Students with Autism and Pervasive Behavioral Challenges ( LEAP ) Program, our mission is to ensure each of our students gains the independence and skills necessary to fully participate in school, community, workplace, and home life.

Our specialized autism program is a nonpublic special education day program approved by the Maryland State Department of Education.

We offer a range of educational and therapeutic services for students with complex academic, communication, social, and behavioral needs. Our program emphasizes the development of lifelong skills through an active approach to learning, including participation in community and work-based learning opportunities that allow them to apply skills outside of the classroom.

Responsibilities

  1. Assist with the implementation of instruction in accordance with students’ IEPs, in cooperation with a supervising teacher, using effective strategies for academic and behavioral success.

  2. Complete instructional-related duties as assigned by supervising teachers and administrators.

  3. Provide instruction, supervision, and classroom management under the direction of the supervising teacher.

  4. Implement behavioral protocols/assignments for students during instructional and non-instructional times.

  5. Utilize instructional and non-instructional times in a professional manner in keeping with administrative guidelines.

  6. Participate in and contribute to in-service training and staff meetings.

  7. Provide support and leadership for curricular and extra-curricular activities that support student-life and promote a positive school experience.

  8. Assist with the implementation of technology in instructional design and delivery in accordance with supervising teacher’s directions.

  9. Assist with the implementation of instruction in relation to Maryland Core Learning Goals, Skills for Success, Content Standards, and specific Industry Standards.

Qualifications

EDUCATION:

By the end of the employee’s initial evaluation period, every individual must meet “No Child Left Behind” Legislation standards for highly qualified staff as defined as any one of the following: 1.) possession of an AA Degree, or 2.) completion of two years of college equivalence (minimum 48 credits), or 3.) a passing score on the state exam for highly qualified staff.

EXPERIENCE:

Previous experience working in a classroom of students with disabilities is preferred.

RELATED TRAINING:

PCM or CPI training will be provided by the department, according to the individual program requirements. Employee must achieve and maintain certification (at the “Practitioner” level or higher for PCM) according to the timeline established within the departmental policy.
