University of Maryland, Baltimore Postdoctoral Fellow - Translational Neuroengineering and Neuroscience Laboratory in Baltimore, Maryland

The University of Maryland, Baltimore Department of Neurosurgery is seeking talented Postdoctoral Fellowsin Regenerative Medicine and Neurosciencein the Translational Neuroengineering and Neuroscience Laboratory led by Prof. Xiaofeng Jia. The department aims to excel and innovate in clinical practice, science, and neurosurgery education. We seek to achieve this by creating a platform and culture whereby all team members contribute to this mission and reach their full capacity for impact and fulfillment. Critical to our success is each team member’s alignment and demonstration of our shared values: * Patients First * Always Do the Right Thing * Leave It Better Than You Found It * Drive at Mastery Scope of Role We are looking for a highly motivated and career-oriented research individual with an excellent publication record, a Ph.D. in neuroscience, cell biology, or a related field, and with hands-on experience in translational animal models. A proven research ability in two or more of these areas is desirable: a) neuroscience research in ischemic brain injury, stroke, or peripheral nerve injury, b) stem cell or extracellular vehicle or exosome therapy, c) in vivo electrophysiology, signal processing, or brain imaging. Other lab experience is helpful but not required: patch-clamp, brain slice cultures, optogenetics, and bioluminescence. We offer multifaceted scientific projects, a place in a committed team, and strong scientific collaborations. We have an outstanding record of helping trainees to build an excellent publication record. Lab interests:1) brain recovery after cardiac arrest with stem cell therapy, extracellular vehicle therapy, or therapeutic hypothermia and underlying mechanisms; 2) glycol-engineered neural stem cells to improve brain outcome after cardiac arrest. 3) Stem cell surface modification to promote nerve regeneration after peripheral nerve injuries (PNIs). The brain projects use in vitro and in vivo models to investigate electrophysiological and cellular mechanisms of brain injury after cardiac arrest with therapeutic interventions such as stem cell therapy and target temperature management. In the PNI project, we will enhance stem cell adhesion and differentiation in vitro, and improve nerve regeneration with stem cells or extracellular vehicles after nerve repair to explore underlying therapeutic mechanisms. Our primary goals are to develop new strategies for brain and/or peripheral nerve injury, improve neural regeneration, and elucidate the underlying therapeutic cellular and molecular mechanisms.
