Performs and coordinates advanced to highly advanced transportation engineering operations or maintenance support work such as construction and/or complex maintenance contract inspection; light and heavy equipment operation; roadway maintenance; traffic control; helping the public during emergency situations; and training other employees. May serve as a lead worker. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.Essential Duties:General Engineering Tech I:Conducts tests of highway construction materials, makes calculations, and records resultsInspects barricades to ensure compliance with barricade standardsInspects complex maintenance and construction-related work to include hot mix overlay to ensure compliance with safety,laws and regulations, contract specifications and departmental procedures.Inspects construction and routine and non-routine contract maintenance methods and workmanship to ensure contractorsbuild and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specificationsMoves equipment, tools, materials, and products.Inspects traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications fordevices, safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control DevicesMay serve as a lead worker and the related tasksMay train other employeesOperates light and heavy equipment; performs preventive maintenance and repairs on equipment; performs roadwaymaintenance.Oversees complex maintenance and spot improvement contractsSands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed duringemergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spillsPerforms other job responsibilities as assigned.General Engineering Tech II: In addition to the above:Administers construction and/or bridge inspection record-keeping activities in a District Area Office.
