GAP Solutions Inc Biologist in Bethesda, Maryland

Position Objective: Provide services as a Biologist in support of the overall functions of the Division of Intramural Research (DIR), Laboratory of Immunogenetics (LIG) within the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform procedures and techniques which include, but are not limited to: sterile culture of human cells and cell lines at Biosafety Level 2, transfection and transduction of human cells using recombinant plasmids, retroviruses or Lentiviruses, DNA and RNA isolation, gene synthesis and cloning, site-directed mutagenesis, CRISPR/Cas9 editing of DNA in cell lines, quantitative PCR, protein production, isolation and purification, Western blotting, and maintenance of parasite cultures in red blood cells.

  • Perform experiments using flow cytometry instruments such as BD LSR and Aria, Beckman CytoFLEX, and analyze data with software such as FlowJo. In addition, experiments may include the use of confocal microscopes.

  • Carry out experiments independently once the protocols and specific aims have been determined with the Federal Task Leader.

  • Maintain detailed laboratory records.

  • Evaluate, interpret, and discuss the results of each experiment with the Federal Task Leader.

  • Participate in the planning of experiments and in the development of future studies.

  • Provide laboratory upkeep and routine maintenance of equipment, for ordering and storing laboratory supplies and equipment, which include chemicals, biological materials, centrifuges, microscopes, balances, flow cytometers, and laminar flow hoods, and for the proper and safe disposal of biological materials and chemicals.

  • Operate and communicate effectively in a group and a team-oriented working environment.

  • Work collaboratively with the Federal Task Leader and other members of the laboratory to fulfill the mission and generate data for publication in scientific journals.

    Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelors or Masters Degree in Life Sciences (e.g. biochemistry, chemistry, microbiology, molecular biology, cell biology) plus a minimum of 2 or preferably 3 years of laboratory experience in a related field.

  • Proficient in principles of cellular and molecular biology.

  • Fluency in the use of applications such as Excel, Powerpoint, Prism, and others for analysis and presentation of biological data.

  • Experience with handling of biological and chemical material.

    Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with non-technical and technical staff.

  • Detail-oriented and possess strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and projects
