Cornell Cooperative Extension Recycling & Composting Educator - Binghamton, NY in Binghamton, New York

The position will serve as the Recycling and Composting Educator for Cornell Cooperative Extension Association of Broome County and under the leadership and oversight of the Environmental Program Lead will provide program implementation and administrative direction, management and coordination for Recycling, Composting and related Solid Waste programs. The Educator will also partner with the Broome County Division of Solid Waste Management through a contract partially funded through New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. The Educator will also assist with program evaluation.

POSITION DETAILS:

This position is a full-time, non-exempt position, 37.5 hours per week. The hourly rate for this position is $21.00. This position, based on eligibility, offers a comprehensive benefit package, to include: health and dental insurance, NYS retirement, vacation, sick and personal leave.

POSITION INFORMATION:

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Natural Resources related field (i.e. environmental science or education, biology, natural resources, conservation) or Equivalent Education (Associate’s Degree and two (2) years of transferrable program/functional experience).

  • Experience relevant to the role of the position.

  • Valid NYS Driver’s License and the ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.

  • Ability to work flexible hours which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate.

  • Ability to plan, organize, implement and present effective and relevant educational lessons to participants and work with diverse audiences of all ages.

  • Ability to carry supplies and equipment, climb stairs with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Proficiency in the use of modern electronic technology and software (e.g., video, audio, computers, texting, Microsoft Office Programs, social media, internet and database software, etc.).

  • Ability to work independently and to effectively participate in professional team efforts.

  • Ability to work with all audiences from pre-school, school age and adult populations

  • Must be able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to plan and organize work responsibilities according to priorities developed with immediate supervisor.

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with recycling and/or composting education.

  • Experience working with community organizations.

  • Familiarity with the community in which the work will take place and ability to utilize program resources within the community.

  • Familiarity with a variety of program delivery methods to reach individuals and groups in youth and adult audiences and ability to integrate youth and adult development principles into educational activities.

    Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

Program Responsibilities:

Program Delivery, Evaluation and Applied Research - 80%

  • Occasionally apply established subject matter knowledge to create lessons plans to deliver recycling, composting, and other solid waste educational programs.

  • Teach the existing educational and volunteer programs including the Master Composter program.

  • Maintain the community composting demonstration site on the grounds of CCE.

  • Work to foster acceptance of program, methods, and policies to address community and individual needs and consider diverse audiences.

  • Provide educational program efforts via mass media including utilizing emails, phone messages, social media and website postings.

  • Apply established subject matter knowledge to deliver recycling and composting educational programs to groups including: community groups, neighborhood associations and schools.

  • Utilize a variety of educational methods which may include direct teaching, group experiences, newsletters, electronic technology, internet and social media to deliver programming related to recycling, composting and other solid waste management topics.

  • Serve as a subject matter resource for composting and recycling issues, utilizing existing subject matter resources and provide standard responses.

  • Contribute actively to the total Cornell Cooperative Extension program effort through implementation of multi-disciplinary programs and Association activities.

  • Interact with program participants representing Cornell Cooperative Extension in a professional manner at all times.

  • Represent Cornell Cooperative Extension before the public, community leaders, government officials, Cornell or other land-grant universities as part of program delivery.

  • Implement program evaluation as designed.

  • Interact with program participants, Association staff, county/community leaders and other key stakeholders to collect evaluation data for improving programs.

  • Assist in making recommended program changes to strengthen and improve programs.

  • Communicate evaluation results and findings.

Administrative Responsibilities:

Direction and Management - 10%

  • Assist supervisor in establishing program goals and priorities.

  • Provide input into the development of marketing strategies to reach target audiences and meet program objectives

  • Assist in identifying community and fiscal resources for program continuance and enhancement.

  • Provide supervisor with program related information to assist the budget development process.

  • Make recommendations to supervisor regarding program budgetary needs.

  • Assist in monitoring program to ensure that educational content conforms to objectives of the Association and is research-based.

  • Support all aspects of volunteer management including: recruitment of new volunteers and ensure all volunteers have the required screening documentation; provide volunteer orientation and serve as an accessible resource to volunteers by providing support to ensure volunteer success.

  • Assist with monitoring program financial status to ensure compliance with funding requirements, program budget, grant specifications, and adherence to Association strategies/plan of work.

  • Assist with identifying ways to reduce costs and maximize existing resources within the Association.

  • Provide programmatic guidance, as needed to staff on topics related to recycling/composting education.

Coordination/Operation - 5%

  • Maintain communication with constituents and the community through a variety of methods such as contributing educational articles to programs newsletters, emails, electronic technology, internet, social media, website postings to increase program visibility and to address composting and recycling issues.

  • Provide information as requested to assist with preparation of reports, impact statements, and success stories on program progress and accomplishments for funders, Board of Directors and others as necessary.

  • Schedule educational outreach directly with community and constituent groups.

  • Purchase approved program materials by traveling to area stores on an occasional basis.

  • Compile, organize and inventory educational materials such as training aids, fact sheets, newsletters, exhibits, and demonstration projects.

  • Implement established program schedule.

  • Collect evaluation data from program participants based on existing framework.

  • Provide complex administrative tasks to support the implementation of communication strategies, including social and print media, on particular program/function.

  • Collect program needs assessment data based on existing framework.

  • Assist in coordinating program implementation activities and planning efforts.

  • Submit program report to meet funding agency requirement.

  • Provide a limited amount of complex administrative support to accomplish financial goals within assigned program/function.

  • Perform general coordination activities including but not limited to attending staff meetings, timely reporting of expenses, working with other staff and general marketing of Extension programs.

  • This position may require the transport of program participants and/or program materials and resources in performing position responsibilities.

Professional Improvement and Other Duties as Assigned - 5%

  • In cooperation with Supervisor and/or Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes in programming and association priorities.

  • Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension including but not limited to attendance at staff meetings, timely reporting of expenses, working with other staff, general marketing of Extension programs and other duties as assigned.

  • Support the association to maintain a safe working environment.
