Manufacturing Process Specialist (Birmingham)
Summary of Position Duties:
The Vendor Oversight (VO) Manufacturing Process Specialist (Sr. MPS) position is in the Nuclear Oversight group, of Southern Nuclear Company (SNC). To enhance supplier and sub-supplier equipment quality, this position is responsible for performing VO surveillance of both Supplier and/or Sub-supplier manufactured equipment. This position also requires a review and report on Supplier and/or Sub-supplier manufacturing processes including the assessment of capability and capacity of machines and processes, manufacturing employee qualifications, and the evaluation of new manufacturing facilities, processes, and technologies.

Conduct Supplier and Sub-Supplier Manufacturing surveillances to evaluate:
Manufacturing Equipment
Manufacturing Processes
Manufacturing Capability
Manufacturing Capacity
Manufacturing employee qualifications
Manufacturing Process Specification M Earn supplier auditor qualification
Perform supplier quality audits.
Identify manufacturing process problems.
Conduct Pre-job Briefs with the Supplier Quality Manager
Maintain job qualifications according to SNC training requirements
Implement VO Manufacturing Process Surveillance Plans with rigor and intrusiveness.
Maintain a Questioning Attitude at all times.
Maintain the VO Database
Monitor the activities of Component Engineers acting in VO roles
Capture supplier manufacturing deficiencies discovered while performing process surveillance activities
Issue and resolve Supplier Non-conformance Reports
Issue, as applicable, Condition Reports
Support VO group metrics reporting
Support group, department, division and company goals
As required, act as a team member to resolve group, department, division and company issues
Self-educate to stay current with new manufacturing processes, codes, standards, etc.
Challenge existing processes and procedures.
Identify process inefficiencies and offer recommendations for resolution.
When required, act on the behalf of the Supplier Quality manager
Education & Work Experience:
The ideal candidate must meet one of the following requirements:
(Note: Although the job duties of Sr. Engineer and Manufacturing Process Specialist Sr. are identical, the Sr. Engineer title can only be used if the candidate is in possession of a bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited program).
Sr. Engineer
- A bachelor’s degree in Engineering (ideally, in the areas of Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering), and a minimum of 5 years of related manufacturing experience, or
Manufacturing Process Specialist, Sr.
Closely related technical degree and a minimum of 10 years of related manufacturing experience, or
A minimum of 15 years of related manufacturing experience.
The following areas will be used in evaluating what is considered “related manufacturing experience”:
Operations management; mid to high level
Design engineering or manufacturing engineering
Project management or related engineering field
Specification Development
Manual or CNC Machining
Equipment or Material Testing
Tool development and design
Welding or Welding Inspection
Coatings or Coatings Inspection
Assembly or Assembly Inspection
Quality Control including Gauge, CMM, Assembly or Test
Foundry Casting design and foundry processes
Production Quality Improvement Integration
Manufacturing Process Scheduling
Additionally, the following Certifications are desirable but not required:
Certified Welding Inspector
Certified Non-destructive Examination Inspector
Certified QC Inspector
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Desired:
Exceptional oral and written communication skills
Thorough knowledge of the processes associated with heavy manufacturing
Ability to evaluate process implementation against applicable technical and quality Codes and Standards
Competent degree of analytical and computer skills, particularly Word, Excel, Access, and Power Point. A background in Visual Basic Applications, SharePoint, ASP.net, VB.net and HTML Programming languages is not required but would be helpful.
Strong teamwork skills and ability to work effectively with a wide variety of people at different levels working toward a common goal.
Quick learner, self-starter, strong initiative, self-motivated
Ability to obtain a valid US Passport.
Travel Requirement:
The work associated with this position requires up 75% travel away from the office.
