The Lead Analyst, Category Profit Improvement will provide fact-based and data-driven guidance to the Manager of Category Profit Improvement and Merchandise leaders in selecting vendors, brands, and SKU’s that result in increased sales and profit.

Major Tasks, Responsibilities, and Key Accountabilities

  • Independently lead the annual assortment review process and work closely with the Manager to identify critical work to move the process forward and create value for the organization.

  • Understand the annual assortment review process (CMP) and the key milestone dates and deliverables needed to support each stage.

  • Understand key steps in the annual assortment review process (CMP) and how to leverage them throughout the review to create “member-backed” assortments while engaging vendors and increasing vendor investment.

  • Partner with Merchant team on creating category strategies and identifying assortment opportunities that drive improved sales/margin performance.

  • Be a mentor to other analysts on the team providing support and best in class approaches to problem solving and workplan management.

  • Have a continuous improvement mindset; Identify areas of opportunity throughout the assortment review process that will improve efficiency and productivity at scale.

  • Conduct rigorous analysis and research, including competitive benchmarking (space, brands, SKUs), market insights, customer insights (i.e., surveys, loyalty analysis), vendor insight (i.e., cost structures, investment analysis) and extensive SKU/brand/vendor-level analysis (i.e., relative productivity, profitability, brand loyalty, SKU transferability, etc.).

  • Work with manager to develop category review documentation that highlights category insights that build into category strategies to grow market share.

  • Develop category CDTs (consumer decision trees) and benchmark share and growth by segment to rest of market that help inform our assortment strategies.

  • Run scenario assortment modeling based off member loyalty data that projects where volume will transfer to/walk and quantify impacts to sales/margins due to assortment changes.

  • Work cross functionally to validate and approve assortment strategies and anticipated financial impacts based off strategic decisions put forth.

  • Work with the Category Review team to develop "Ask" materials to be shared with vendors during negotiations.

  • Serve Merchant team as point person for all SKU based analytical research focused on assortment, sales, and cost.

    Qualifications

  • Four-year college degree or equivalent experience; Finance and/or other quantitative analytical degree a strong plus

  • 3-5+ years of relevant analytical experience with strong merchandise profitability understanding

  • Understanding of retail merchandising basics (ie, category management), and merchandising organizational structures and processes

  • Strong analytical skills including Excel skills.

  • Strong communication skills including the ability to translate analytical research into presentations using Microsoft PowerPoint

  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple assignments and meet tight deadlines.

  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with all levels of Merchandise leadership.

  • Ability to work independently and adapt to changing work priorities.

  • The candidate selected for this position will be a self-motivated, intellectually curious, and high-energy individual who can easily function in a high demand, performance-driven environment.

  • Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint skills essential; Tableau skills preferred.

In accordance with the Pay Transparency requirements, the following represents a good faith estimate of the compensation range for this position. At BJ’s Wholesale Club, we carefully consider a wide range of non-discriminatory factors when determining salary. Actual salaries will vary depending on factors including but not limited to location, education, experience, and qualifications. The pay range for this position is starting from $98,500.00.
