This position will remain open until filled; the posting will be taken down once a candidate is selected

The Division of Veterans Services (IDVS) has an opening for a full-time Cook Senior at the Idaho State Veterans Home in Boise.

The ideal candidate for this position coordinates cooking services; prepares, cooks, portions, and serves food for daily meals; performs related work.

The Cook Senior position requires shift work, which includes evenings, weekends and holidays.

Responsibilities:

  • Plans and prepares daily work for cooks and food-service workers and/or institutional clients.

  • Instructs in food preparation, serving, and sanitation and trains staff in job skills and work habits.

  • Ensures proper use of standardized recipes and that menu item quantities are adequate.

  • Inventories supplies and ensures adequate availability to meet daily needs.

  • Prepares meals within guidelines of menu and dietary requirements.

  • Cleans and prepares fresh fruit and vegetables, cooks meats, prepares salads and salad dressings, bakes breads, rolls, biscuits, and desserts.

  • Purees or juices fruits and vegetables and bakes, roasts, stews, fries, and steam-cooks food.

  • Ensures cleanliness of cooking and serving areas and maintains sanitation by proper care, cleaning, and storage of equipment and utensils.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

You must possess all the minimum qualifications below to pass the exam for this position.

Some knowledge of:

  • Food values, basic nutrition in the preparation of special diets

  • Supervisory practices

    Good knowledge of:

  • Methods and materials used to prepare foods for large-scale institutional use

  • Use and care of cooking utensils and equipment

  • Sanitation and safety practices used in food handling and preparation

Experience:

  • Performing large-scale quantity cooking

  • Training others in food preparation and serving

  • Following recipes and menus

  • Calculating volume measurements used in cooking
