Location/Division Specific Information

We are a research, development, and production site in Bremen currently, with about 500 employees, whose “high-end” measurement and analysis instruments (mass spectrometers) are used in research and science worldwide. Our innovative products in the fields of Life Sciences MS and Inorganic MS, as well as Trace Elemental Analysis, are among the leading products globally in their respective markets. We are currently seeking a highly skilled and experienced Staff Scientist to join our dynamic Research & Development team in Bremen. As a Staff Scientist for new research and development projects, you will play a crucial role in driving innovation in our field.

As a key member of our R&D team, you will have the opportunity to develop innovative instrumentation and collaborate with our global network of sites, where different perspectives and talents come together to achieve common goals.

Your primary focus will be to develop novel cutting-edge hardware that becomes a crucial part of our high-end mass spectrometers. You will collaborate with a talented team of technical professionals, guiding them to design and implement feasibility studies and analyze data to solve complex technical problems. Working closely with your technical colleagues, you will have a vital role in deriving detailed technical specifications and overseeing all stages of product development, from initial research to final production.

In this role, you will be making critical technical decisions on a daily basis, while also fostering an environment that promotes effective, collaborative, and inclusive decision-making among your colleagues. You will be responsible for planning, executing, and documenting experiments, as well as developing comprehensive verification test plans and test summary reports. Additionally, you will provide guidance and support to scientists, software engineers, and mechanical and electrical engineers in developing sub-system requirement specifications.

As an integral part of the project cycle, you will ensure seamless knowledge transfer to our operations, product support, and field service teams, enabling them to effectively support the newly developed instruments.

Responsibilities

  • Conception, implementation, and analysis of feasibility experiments to demonstrate the proof of principle for innovative hardware concepts, showcasing your ability to conceive and implement novel ideas.

  • Ensure high experimental quality and deep theoretical understanding throughout all stages of product development, from research to serial production.

  • Apply intellectual property (IP) principles, rules, and strategies when creating invention disclosures, patents, publications, and presentations, demonstrating your expertise in protecting and leveraging intellectual property.

  • Carry out sophisticated simulations to accompany ion optical design process, demonstrating your proficiency in utilizing advanced tools and techniques.

  • Embrace and overcome complex or novel challenges by developing effective solutions and execution strategies highlighting your problem-solving abilities.

  • Collaborate closely with your colleagues to create control software for hardware components emphasizing your teamwork and collaboration skills.

  • Generate clear and comprehensive documentation as part of the development process, ensuring that knowledge is effectively captured and shared.

  • Communicate and document development status verbally in internal meetings and in writing, utilize your strong communication skills and ability to provide clear updates on project progress.

Experience & Education

  • Demonstrate a proven track record of 5+ years of industrial or academic experience after successful completion of a Ph.D. in Physics, or related fields.

  • Conduct research and development of novel hardware for analytical instrumentation or related technologies, show your ability to innovate and contribute to advancements in the field.

  • Experience in design, simulation, and evaluation of ion optical components.

  • Understanding of particle simulations in electrical, magnetic and/or gas fields is required.

  • Demonstrate hands-on experience in testing and troubleshooting complex mechanical and electronic components, highlighting your ability to work with and resolve technical challenges.

  • Emphasize your strong flexibility to work collaboratively in a team as well as independently, demonstrating your ability to adapt to different work dynamics while maintaining a structured and detailed scientific approach.
