INTERVIEWS FOR SELECTED CANDIDATES WILL BE HELD ON WEDNESDAY, JULY 31

The Public Health Department promotes the health of the entire community through varied programs ranging from control of communicable diseases and coordinated responses to health emergencies to individual case management to primary prevention of disease and wellness promotion.

The Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) staff and Peer Counselors are seeking a new member for our team! We partner with families and their health care providers to ensure the best possible breastfeeding experience for new mothers. The Public Health WIC program supports supplemental nutrition, breastfeeding, health education, and coordinated access to community health services. This position also provides support to the WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counseling (BFPC) program, which connects new mothers with a trained peer counselor to educate, encourage, and support breastfeeding as the norm. Additionally, WIC provides early access to supportive care when needed, which may include occasional communications outside of normal business hours.

The primary responsibilities of these staff members is to support new moms by listening, engaging them in the WIC BFPC program through regular appointments and communication, documenting interactions, promoting prenatal education, and referring to lactation consultants. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Greeting and welcoming participants at WIC reception. Assisting with program navigation, customer communication, and scheduling appointments.

  • Engaging and enrolling new prenatal participants in the BFPC/WIC program. Documenting all periodic contacts within two databases.

  • Communicating with participants regularly per program requirements, occasionally outside normal business hours. Supporting pre and postnatal breastfeeding education. Responding to participant concerns and questions related to normal breastfeeding. Referring participants to Lactation Consultants as needed.

  • In charge of front desk duties including, but not limited to, answering phones, scheduling appointments, issuing benefits, issuing breast pumps and greeting clients. Supporting the department in other duties as assigned.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Bring value to a strong Public Health team to prevent disease in women, infants, and children through optimal nutrition and breastfeeding support, referrals, and education.

  • Be enthusiastic about nutrition, breastfeeding, and health promotion strategies.

  • Be committed to and participate in the department’s work towards diversity, inclusion and equity.

  • Possess strong communication, office, and typing skills, and be able to work independently to prioritize tasks and ensure compliance to communication and documentation program requirements.

Our full-time staff members enjoy an extensive benefit package including but not limited to a generous leave program, 11 standard holidays and 2 floating holidays, CalPERS retirement, medical insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, life insurance, flexible spending accounts for medical and dependent care expenses, and a deferred compensation plan including 401(a), 457(b) and Roth options. We also offer a tuition reimbursement program, flexible schedules, and even a telework option, depending on program needs!
