Job Overview:

Reports to assigned work locations as required to meet organizational needs. BMET III can demonstrate confidence in using test equipment to diagnose and service medical equipment. Ensures all medical equipment meets manufacture specifications and is safe for patient care. Can assist clinical staff in the use of medical equipment, documents all work performed and participates in the Biomedical Engineering emergency on-call program. Staff assists management in meeting regulatory requirements and department/organizational goals. Provides technical leadership and support to others within the department. Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Minimum AAS degree in Biomedical Engineering, Electronics Engineering Technology or equivalent work/military experience in Biomedical Engineering.

  • 7+ years of hands on experience

  • Advance knowledge of biomedical/electronic test equipment

  • Knows principles and function of electricity/electronics

  • Knows how to use MS Office and other computer applications

  • Knows various types of medical equipment and medical terminology

  • Holds technical service certification from at least one medical device manufacture

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of computers and networks

  • Eligible for AAMI/ICC certification

  • Imaging or Anesthesia service training/hands on experience

  • Project management experience

  • Leadership experience

Scheduling Requirements:

  • Fully onsite in Elizabeth, NJ

  • On-call responsibilities once every four weeks, (subject to change)

Essential Functions:

  • Conducts preventive maintenance inspections appropriate to level of job competence using appropriate productivity & quality measures. Cost effectiveness is judged by completing PM & minor repairs within reasonable average items per hour guideline. Quality of work is evident. Completes monthly assigned tasks within the specified timeframe prioritizing inspections of high risk over low risk equipment. Service documentation is both accurate and complete. Validates PM procedures following manufacturer guidelines and departmental risk system. Assist Biomedical Manager in evaluating effectiveness of PM scheduling frequency.

  • Actively participates and/or coordinates with biomedical staff to address scheduled and corrective maintenance service requests. Assists with troubleshooting & repair of medical equipment using established productivity & quality measures Collaborates with other service team members to help determine most cost effective service strategy to follow. Cost effectiveness is determined by efficient use of time and resources used to manage daily workload. Quality of repairs is evident and lasting. Knowledge of the function of the device is also evidenced by training of other biomedical staff and users. Demonstrates the need to maintain an adequate level of parts on hand as applicable, to assist in keeping downtime to an absolute minimum. Timely and accurately documents all service requests and repairs in the biomedical equipment database. Cross trains other staff & encourages follow-up. Assists Biomedical Manager in assigning scheduled and unscheduled service requests.

  • Inspects new medical devices equipment, and participates in installations ensuring compliance with existing safety codes and standards. Learns about the function/performance of new medical devices with speed & comprehension. Secures all required medical device information required for the biomedical equipment database. Shows initiative to secure current service and operator manuals for proper servicing of all types of medical equipment.

  • Assist Manager to meet regulatory requirements and goals. Complies with and supports system, hospital and departmental policies and procedures, goals and objectives. Reports witnessed violations that put patients, staff, department or facility in jeopardy taking appropriate action where and when necessary. Effectively collaborates with Biomedical Manager and others to investigate and resolve reported unsafe conditions taking action where necessary to correct them.

  • Provides in-service training for other technical staff on the safe and proper use of all tools and all test equipment. Re-trains staff as needed.

  • Assist Biomedical Manager address medical equipment recalls/device alerts from manufactures and/or F.D.A.

  • Participates in On Call duties after normal working hours. Must respond to a call within 15 minutes by telephone, and reports to the facility within a maximum of one hour if required to be on site. (Under normal circumstances) Is able to give technical instruction to users over the phone minimizing equipment downtime, while providing for the continuum in patient care, and organizational cost effectiveness.

  • Provides technical leadership to other biomedical service team members to maintain a high level of competency and continuum of care within his/her specialty group or to the biomedical service team at large (as applicable)
