Position Overview:

The Boating Intelligence (BI) Design Lab is seeking a highly motivated Sensor Analytic. As a sensor analytics engineer, you will develop algorithms to translate raw sensor data into meaningful information about the boat and its environment for use in downstream applications.

Extracting information from sensor data plays a key role in Brunswick’s pursuit of Boating Intelligence. Data from on-board sensors is required to train and validate digital twins, and can enable new features in autonomy, driver assistance, performance monitoring, and predictive maintenance.

Essential Functions:

  • Collaborate with engineers and interns to identify the necessary sensors, including their specifications and optimal placement, for a given application.

  • Collect test data from a variety of boats and/or instruments.

  • Implement algorithms to transform raw sensor data into useful information about the boat and its environment. This could include estimating the boat’s pose, velocity, and acceleration; estimating the speed and direction of the wind and water current; identifying anomalies in the boat’s motion; or estimating the health of the boat’s components.

  • Help to implement algorithms in downstream applications.

Diversity of thought and experiences is fundamental when imagining the unimaginable. Certain skillsets/experiences are necessary; however, others can be developed along the way.

Required Qualifications:

  • To be considered for the internship, candidates must have permanent US Work authorization.

  • Current enrollment in anengineering program at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

  • Delivers quality technical reports, presentations, and documentation.

  • Proficient in MATLAB and/or Python programming languages.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Enrollment in Data Analytics, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Electrical Engineering program.

  • Interest and experience indigital signal processing.

  • Interest and experience in sensor fusion algorithms (e.x. Kalman filters).

  • Interest and experience intimeseries analysis and anomaly detection.

  • Interest and experience indata-driven modeling and control.

Travel Requirements :

There may be opportunities to travel for data collection and testing at a remote facility. Although travel is encouraged if your schedule allows, travel is never mandatory, and performance evaluations are not based on the ability to travel .

Working Conditions:

Learning Opportunities: Our internships are designed to provide hands-on experience in a professional setting. You will work alongside experienced professionals and get a chance to apply your academic knowledge to real-world tasks.

Project Work: The work environment is supportive, collaborative, and conducive to learning. Interns typically work on specific projects or tasks that contribute to the organization’s goals. This may range from supporting larger projects to handling smaller, individual assignments.

Hours: Interns must work at least 8 hours in person at the lab each week during the fall and spring terms. You may work up to 20 hours maximum. During summer, interns are expected to work 40 hours in person at the lab each week.

Feedback and Performance Reviews: As an intern, you will receive feedback and performance reviews throughout your assignment. We value the importance for interns to understand their progress and areas for improvement.

Responsibility: Interns at BI Design Lab are expected to manage their own schedules, set goals, and seek feedback for their professional development.
