JOB DESCRIPTION:

NORC at the University of Chicago is seeking a Senior Research Associate I to support our Economics, Justice and Society Department. NORC’s Economics, Justice & Society department gathers reliable, timely data to accurately assess the professional and financial well-being of individuals, communities, and the nation.

DEPARTMENT:

ECONOMICS, JUSTICE, AND SOCIETY

TheEconomics, Justice and Society (EJS) Department (https://www.norc.org/About/Departments/Pages/economic-justice-and-society.aspx) delivers actionable research on critical social programs and issues, timely socio-economic trend data, and evidence-based solutions across a wide variety of topics from business dynamics to household formation. The department is home to NORC’s Center for Public Safety and Justice, Center on Behavioral Economic Analysis and Decision-Making, and three long-running flagship surveys – the General Social Survey, the Survey of Consumer Finance, and the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth. We provide insights into communities, households, businesses, and the nation through our expertise in income and poverty, household finance, youth development, victimization, law enforcement, religion, traffic safety, data governance, and other topics. We engage in policy analysis and evaluation research relating to social programs and issues, the economy and the labor force, transportation and traffic safety, and crime and law enforcement. We work with a diverse set of clients and partners, including policy-makers and data users in national, state and local governments, academia, and the press.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Contribute to the design and implementation of key project tasks in collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team of researchers.

  • Lead key tasks in technical assistance, research design, data collection, and analysis, while supporting the project manager with timely project management and production of deliverables.

  • Plan and implement a wide range of data collection methods and activities.

  • Assist with quantitative and qualitative data analysis and synthesis.

  • Lead the drafting of reports and presentations for clients and professional meetings.

  • Author sections of technical reports, white papers, key findings from analyses, and other project deliverables.

  • Perform task level project management duties such as monitoring budgets, tracking schedules, and following quality guidelines.

  • Engage in key roles for business development coordination, writing and budgeting tasks.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Social Science, Economics or a related field. Degree involving quantitative analysis desired. Masters degree preferred.

  • At least 3 years of research experience (internships included) in social science research, with qualitative and/or quantitative methods and analysis required;

  • Basic knowledge of the principles, processes, and methods of survey research through reading literature and experience in the field.

  • Understanding of routine sampling procedures and working knowledge of statistical software packages (SAS, SPSS, NVivo, Tableau, etc.) preferred.

  • Must demonstrate effective workplace competencies, including:

  • Effective problem solving skills.

  • Adaptability and willingness to work on multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Strong written and verbal communications

  • Attentiveness to detail

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively within a team

  • Proficiency with MS Office/M365 applications.

  • Occasional travel for site visits and meetings may be required.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

The pay range for this position is$70,000 - $96,000.

This position is classified as regular. Regular staff are eligible for NORC’s comprehensive benefits program. Benefits include, but are not limited to:
