Case Western Reserve University Research Assistant 1 in Cleveland, Ohio

POSITION OBJECTIVE

Working under moderate supervision, the Research Assistant 1 will perform research work in support of the development of technologies and devices for biomarker testing, digital diagnostics, and innovative health systems. This position will perform research work with clinical samples, molecular biology, microfluidics, nanoparticles, magnetics, computer, and software engineering. 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

  1. Perform research work in medical and related technical areas involves use of lab skills. Perform research work related to biomarker testing and disease monitoring. Conduct hands-on experiments under biosafety level-2 laboratory environment including microbial and cell culture, nanoparticle synthesis and characterization, and device development and engineering. (45%)
  2. Conduct analysis of biological and clinical samples using molecular biology techniques, including but not limited to RT-PCR, isothermal DNA amplification, and ELISA. (20%)
  3. Record results for a particular experiment or closely related series of experiments. Maintain records of experiments. (20%)

     

NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

  1. Maintain test equipment utilized in experiments including digital diagnostic equipment and other related tools. (5%)
  2. Order laboratory supplies. (5%)
  3. Perform other duties related to laboratory safety and operations as assigned. (5%)

     

CONTACTS

Department: Regular interaction with the principal investigator to oversee the efficient operation of the laboratory. Daily contact with lab members towards executing research projects. 

University: Weekly contact with other departments and core facilities to use, exchange materials and information. Regular contact with Case Western Reserve University facilities. 

External: Limited contact with vendors to exchange information.

Students: Regular contact with students in the lab to exchange information.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY 

This position has no direct supervision of staff employees.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience: Bachelor¿s degree in science and 0 to 1 year of experience or Associate's degree in an approved biotechnology program and 0 to 2 years of research experience required.

 

REQUIRED SKILLS 

  1. Has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within biomedicine and for wet-lab. 
  2. Ability to follow instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. 
  3. Ability to operate laboratory equipment.
  4. Ability to meet consistent attendance.
  5. Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors and customers face to face.
  6. Microbial and molecular biology experience (DNA extraction, PCR, isothermal DNA amplification, ELISA) is preferred but not required.
  7. Device engineering and software development is preferred but not required.

     

WORKING CONDITIONS

This position requires working in a biomedical research laboratory environment and working with frequent interactions with adjoining laboratories and vendors. General laboratory environment. May have exposure to hazards. Personal protective equipment, including lab coat, gloves and goggles, will be provided to limit exposure to hazards.
