Salary Range:

Engineer/Engineer Tech(Grade 6)-$70,961- $88,700

Engineer/Engineer Tech(Grade 7)- $83,413-$104,268

Engineer Sr/Engineer Tech Sr(Grade 8)- $94,225- $122,491

Job Description Summary

The Transmission Operations Engineering position is responsible to be a team member that provides real-time reliability support. These positions will have responsibilities for the PJM, SPP and ERCOT footprints. The positions require an engaged individual that shows capability of learning technical skills and partake in collaborative discussions.

Job Description

Duties of the engineer include but are not limited to the following:

Reliability Engineering:

  • Daily tasks such as next day studies, weekly analysis, and ensure coverage over critical outage periods.

  • Be engaged in RTO activities to increase awareness of industry changes/impacts.

  • Perform engineering activities, and achieve technical goals such as inadequate protection studies, equipment de-rate studies.

  • Support Compliance efforts.

  • Participate and document best practices, processes, and operational guides.

  • Includes developing operational emergency plans involving Blackstart and capacity deficiency.

  • Participate in 24x7 on call rotation

Performance Engineering:

  • Daily tasks such as outage approvals, ad-hoc outage analysis, month-ahead studies.

  • Assist team in running studies for the Seasonal Performance Appraisal (SPA) and report on findings.

  • Develop and configure operational settings, reclosing settings, cap bank settings, transformer tap settings, and UFLS settings.

  • Be engaged in RTO activities to increase awareness of industry changes/impacts.

  • Coordinate with Transmission and Distribution Planning departments on outages and operational settings.

  • Advocate for operational needs with Engineering and Engineering Standards groups.

  • Perform inadequate protection studies and long-term protection coordination studies (EPR I GridCOPs).

  • Support regulatory compliance efforts.

  • Document best practices, processes, and operational guides.

  • Coordinate needs and support needs of the Transmission Dispatch Center (TDC) and System Control Center (SCC) as needed.

  • Act as liaison between real-time desks (TDC/SCC), and all AEP planning teams, engineering, construction management, and maintenance groups engaged in capital improvement efforts.

Essential Job Functions are listed below:

  • Technical Expertise: Possesses technical knowledge of power flow concepts and familiarity with power flow tools such as PSS/E, MUST and/or TARA is preferred. Technical knowledge of short-circuit modeling software such as ASPEN/CAPE is preferred. Knowledge of AEP Transmission system topology (PJM/MISO/SPP/ERCOT) footprint is a plus.

  • Leadership and Guidance: Coordinates work activities of others within the team, works autonomously, or other corporate entity as necessary to perform routine engineering work. Performs routine engineering activity independently. Ensures all work activities are performed in accordance with the policies, practices, standards and rules of the company and complies with the regulations and procedures required by external agencies. Provides training and guidance to lower-level employees.

  • Planning and Organizational Ability: Participates in the development of plans by establishing measurable goals, objectives and requirements for specific areas of responsibility. Coordinates the development of input necessary to establish projected cost of all projects. Identifies and initiates appropriate corrective action when objectives are not being met.

  • Problem Solving and Initiative : Resolves and initiates solutions to routine and/or moderately complex problems which usually require additional definition/clarification before analysis can begin. Identifies problems that are beyond the normal routine. Seeks out opportunities and embrace new ideas and approaches.

  • Communication Skills: Coordinates the work of other engineers in an efficient and effective manner. Develops, reviews or prepares reports on complex technical subjects clearly, concisely and effectively, in a manner suitable for presentation to management, professional societies, regulatory bodies, etc. Leads and facilitates meetings effectively.

  • Interpersonal Skills: Possess collaborative and consensus building skills. Functions as a team leader and member. Networks upward and downward in several disciplines inside and outside the AEP system. Leverages network to get things done.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Note: This position can be also filled with an Engineering Technologist. So Engineering technologist degrees can also apply to the same.

ENGINEER GRADE

Engineer (Grade 06):

Has typically acquired two (2) or more years of related engineering experience along with a Bachelor's degree in engineering in a program accredited by ABET*

Individuals with a Master's degree in engineering from an engineering program accredited by ABET* may be considered for entry into the organization at this level.

Degree in Electrical Engineering Highly Preferred.

Engineer (Grade 07):

Has typically acquired four (4) or more years of related engineering experience along with a Bachelor's degree in engineering in a program accredited by ABET* Degree in Electrical Engineering Highly Preferred.

Grade 06- 07 -Passing the Fundamentals of Engineering examination in preparation for future licensing as a Professional Engineer (PE) is encouraged and preferred.

Engineer Sr(Grade 8)

Engineer Sr: Has typically acquired 6 or more years of related engineering experience along with a Bachelor's degree in Engineering in a program accredited by ABET, or 4 years of related engineering experience along with a Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering from a program accredited by ABET; Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in any U.S. state or Puerto Rico** is encouraged and preferred

Acceptable alternatives are (1) a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (non-ABET), plus a Professional Engineers (PE) license in any state of the U.S. or (2) a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (non-ABET) plus a Master’s degree in Engineering from a university with an ABET accredited Bachelor’s program.
