Description of Work

Position will function as a Transportation Supervisor I for the Cumberland County Maintenance Unit in Fayetteville, NC. Position will be required to work in diverse working environments performing various general maintenance operations. Position will be responsible for supervising a roadway maintenance crew working in and around heavy traffic, near heavy equipment, and with power tools. Position must be able to maintain a close team environment or work independently as needed. Responsibilities include the supervision of a roadway maintenance crew that is involved in pavement patching, drainage maintenance, shoulder repair, paved and unpaved roadway maintenance, vegetation management, snow and ice removal, and emergency response to roadway maintenance needs. Position is required to work nights and weekends, as needed, for emergency and planned operations in all types of weather conditions and on uneven surfaces and slopes.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Experience in road maintenance and repair; as well as maintenance equipment operations.

  • Experience in NCDOT snow and ice operations.

  • Experience in Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety policy and practices.

  • Experience in roadway maintenance and repair in one of the following: should and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, asphalt patching, snow and ice removal, crack sealing, full depth patching and pothole patching.

  • Experience in planning and organizing work.

Additional Expectations:

The selected candidate must be able to legally operate Class A CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions and have a Tanker (N) endorsement at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Steel toe safety shoes will be needed. Employee will be expected to work in emergency situations and inclement weather.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and (6) six years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience. Experience must be related to functional area of the work that the position will supervise.
