Basic Commerce and Industries, Inc. (BCI) is seeking a Mid-level candidate to fill one (1) full time systems safety engineer position to execute engineering and system safety for Counter Unmanned Aerial Systems (cUAS), safety program under NSWC Dahlgren.

Experience Required:
This position requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering, scientific, business or technical discipline or military operational experience at the E5 level or higher. 10+ years of general operational experience in systems engineering for DoD weapon systems programs, OR 10 years' combination US Navy, civil service, or industry experience. Two (2) years of qualified experience in combat systems engineering and systems safety, gained while on active duty or in engineering serving in support of cUAS, similar systems, or other software intensive system. Operational experience at sea or ashore while on active duty is a major benefit but is not a requirement. Candidates must have skills supporting routine engineering tasks in system safety including hazard analysis, probability and severity assessments, design and architecture analysis and the generation of system safety reports / documentation, plus specific experience with Systems Software Safety. Experience with Microsoft Office Suite applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access) is required. Familiarity with U.S. Navy combat systems and organizations is a must. A formal degree supporting systems safety engineering or software safety engineering from an accredited University would be an acceptable day for day substitute for experience.
Description of Duties:
The Systems Safety Engineer (SSE) will provide systems safety engineering support to the efforts of NSWC Dahlgren's Counter Unmanned Aerial Systems (cUAS) program. cUAS are systems that detect, track, and disrupt or destroy drones and other unmanned aircraft. This role includes working with multiple activities, Principals For Safety (PFS) and Program Management for systems that would be integrated with cUAS in the identification and execution of required safety analyses, risk characterization and risk acceptance in support of program milestones leading to certification. The scope of the Safety Program includes systems safety engineering and hazard analysis for cUAS with emphasis on Software Safety. Day to day engineering support or tasking will include schedule planning, engineering change reviews, ship change reviews, hazard analysis, mishap risk analysis, developing or identifying system safety design requirements for hazard mitigation, hazard record entry and maintenance in the Hazard Tracking System, coordination of system safety efforts with interfacing activities such as Test and Evaluation, performing data collection and recording of system safety documents.
Travel: Local (within the continental US) travel may be required for no more than 15% of time, not to include weekends or holidays. Additional travel outside the US has not yet been determined and may require some travel abroad for brief periods.
