Description of Job
This is a seasonal position that will start on May 5, 2025 and end by September 26, 2025 . As a seasonal position, selected applicant will not be eligible for unemployment insurance at the end of assignment.
Duties:
This position assists the Department's Early Detection and Rapid Response (EDDR) Specialist with the management of List A noxious weed species (designated for statewide eradication) and some populations of List B species, primarily in the Denver metropolitan area, but withup to 6in-state, overnight trips planned for the 2025 season. The typical daily schedule will entail meeting local groups at specific field locations to perform such duties as eradication of noxious weeds from public and private lands, surveying locations for existing and/or new populations of targeted weed species, mapping weed infestations using the EDDMapS Pro mapping application, and some administrative data needs.
Work will require extensive hiking in prairie, riparian, and foothill habitats and will focus on such species as Mediterranean sage, purple loosestrife, African rue, myrtle spurge, hairy willow-herb, meadow knapweed, yellow starthistle, and orange hawkweed. Eradication efforts will require primarily mechanical and chemical control techniques. Utilizing a shovel to uproot individual or small populations of weeds will be a regular field duty as well as handling and applying herbicides with hand-held or backpack sprayers, under supervision. This position will have the opportunity to work with a wide array of local, state, and federal weed management professionals to assist them with work on public and private lands. Some work with biological control agent collection and redistribution may also be completed periodically throughout the summer.
A vehicle and tablet will be provided for business purposes. This positions will work in the Denver Metro CO area with occasional overnight, statewide travel.
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

$20.00 - $22.00 Hourly
Proven Skills and Abilities:
Some prior field experience working in natural resource settings
Relevant education/coursework from an accredited institution
Physical capability to work outdoors regularly in varied summer conditions
Ability to carry out noxious weed control efforts with little supervision
A valid Colorado driver’s license (or the ability to obtain one prior) and acceptable driving record maintained during the period of employment
Preferred Qualifications:
Basic plant identification skills
Prior experience with herbicide applications
Knowledge of Colorado's Front Range communities and weed issues
In-progress or completed degree in biology or natural resources field
Experience with aerial imagery/mapping programs such as ArcGIS
