A Regular Substitute is a teacher/Teaching Assistant who is appointed to a regular teaching/teaching assistant position in place of a regular teacher/teaching assistant who is away from his/her position on a leave of absence. (minimum of one semester; maximum of full school year)

Dates of assignment: 9/27/24 - 1/24/25

The successful applicant will be responsible for providing appropriate content area instruction to students with Autism, developmental delays and/or multiple disabilities, as well as difficulties managing behavior, coping with frustration and following multi-step directions in accordance with curricular expectations and Individualized Education Plans.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Candidate Should:

  • Possess a current NYS certification in Special Education (B-12 preferred, 1-6 required)

  • Possess 3-5 years' experience working with a variety of developmental disabilities, as well as comprehensive knowledge relative to working with students who present with significant learning disabilities, communication needs, as well as difficulties managing challenging behavior, coping with frustration, and emotional regulation within a school setting.

  • Possess knowledge of a variety of disabilities, including Learning Disabilities, Speech and Language Impairments, Other Health Impairments, and Autism. As well, how these disabilities impact a student's learning progress, functioning and behavior.

  • Possess demonstrated skill in Functional Behavioral Assessments, development and implementation of Behavioral Intervention Plans with strong skills in data collection.

  • Possess well-developed written and oral communication skills and proven ability to interact positively with students, parents, and colleagues.

  • Possess an ability to work effectively as a member of a collaborative team as well as schedule and coordinate a variety of service providers.

  • Possess effective case management and resource management skills.

  • Possess demonstrated experience in differentiated instruction, modifying curriculum and applying research-based instructional approaches when teaching students with disabilities.

  • Possess demonstrated experience implementing and addressing toileting needs, and assisting with lifting and/or positioning.

  • Possess a strong working knowledge of Federal and State Mandates pertaining to developmental disabilities.

  • Possess a strong work ethic and positive attitude to support students, teammates, colleagues and families.

  • Possess the ability to remain flexible and respond effectively as emergent classroom situations warrant.

  • Possess 3-5 years' experience with Systematic Instruction (ABA) preferred.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide content area instruction to students with Autism Spectrum Disorder in a self-contained classroom in accordance with curricular expectations and Individualized Education Plans.

  • Articulates specific learning challenges, skill deficiencies or social adjustment difficulties as exhibited by students and identifies appropriate remediation to facilitate student regulation, behaviors and academic achievement.

  • Evaluates and monitors each student in terms of his/her progress toward attainment of specific learning goals.

  • Coordinate efforts of the instructional and support team.

  • Develop behavioral intervention plans, monitor behavior, develop appropriate intervention strategies and track progress.

  • Develop Individualized Education Plans, integrated goals and ability to data track progress.

  • Facilitate the inclusion of students with disabilities in the general education environment.

  • Coordinate the provision of various related services and work collaboratively with treatment providers, general education teachers, support staff and administration.

  • Provide appropriate training to classroom staff regarding the needs of individual students.

  • Communicate with parents and other professional and support members, including agency representatives specializing in the management and instruction and behaviors of elementary-aged students.

  • Other responsibilities as assigned by Building Administration, the Director of Special Education, or the Assistant Superintendent for Exceptional Education and Student Services.
