Production Director

Status: Full-time

Job Reports To: Assistant General Manager - Operations

This position is responsible for managing all production activities and acting as a communication link between external customers, print sales executives, and intercompany job planners. The Production Director oversees daily press / mail / plate-room and other assigned operations in the manufacturing of Adams Publishing group products and commercial print publications in a cost-effective manner, with the highest quality standards available using existing technology. This position leads press operators, mailroom, and transportation personnel, and must guide the plant to meet customer expectations for reproduction quality, content freshness, and productivity. Cost effective management of materials consumption is a critical component of this job, as is the need to constantly search for production efficiencies that reduce expense. This position must set an example by complying with and enforcing policies and practices that ensure compliance with local, state, and federal laws as well as company policy regarding equal employment opportunity, affirmative action, and regulatory agency safety and environmental requirements. The production director must keep accurate, useful, and timely operational, maintenance, and safety training records, as well as establish equipment maintenance priorities while meeting production schedule requirements.

Job Functions

The successful candidate must be a flexible self-starter who is attentive to details, diplomatic, able to provide direction, and able to multi-task. This position will work with different personality types across a number of different publications. Candidates for this position should have strong interpersonal skills and client orientation and exhibit an ability to work effectively with internal and external contacts as a team member.

This position actively assists with the following duties:

  • Achieve business unit financial and operating objectives
  • Ensure staff employs and maintains effective processes and develops and refines their skill sets
  • Actively recruit new employees, and provide a path for training and advancement for current associates
  • Provide consistent leadership that ensures accomplishment of department objectives
  • Implement efficient staffing plans
  • Develop the departmental budget and ensure adherence to the objectives outlined therein
  • Design, implement, and execute effective quality control measures for both internal and external products
  • Measure and evaluate key performance measures such as production quality, content freshness, productivity, and cost-effective materials storage and consumption
  • Provide ongoing staff training and development to insure each employee learns all appropriate job functions, procedures, and equipment operation within the total production area of responsibility

Essential Functions:

Perform job duties and conduct self in accordance with company core values. Initiate and nurture effective, professional relationships with internal and external contacts. Work closely with other supervisors and managers to ensure completion of all production functions in a timely manner.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Strong leadership, decision-making, staff development, and interpersonal skills
  • Five years experience as a foreman, or equivalent management experience in a cold web-offset newspaper printing production environment
  • Well-developed verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills that have been demonstrated in a production environment

Technology Skills:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and equivalent google software (docs, sheets, g-mail, etc.)
  • Extensive knowledge of how all printing, mailroom, and transportation department function
  • Extensive technical knowledge of and mechanical aptitude for offset printing techniques

Education:

College degree or equivalent work experience preferred.
