Position Summary: Under the direction of the shift supervisor, the EMT performs general duties of pre-hospital emergency medical service. The EMT performs basic like support, performs CPR, applies dressing and manages wound care, splinting of fractures, and maintains airway. The EMT works with an MICT and under the department medical guidelines and authorized activities.
Examples of Work (Essential Functions):
- Provides basic life support to the sick and injured according EMT duties; responds to request for service; transports patients to appropriate medical facility;
- Attends departmental trainingsessions;
- Operates emergency vehicles safely andprofessionally;
- Cleans assigned station and unit(s) daily;
- Completes all patient care reports, billing reports and incident reports by end of each shift;
- Completes daily maintenance and vehicle checksheets;
- Conducts daily self-training oreducation;
- Maintains station house and assures equipment is clean and in good workingcondition;
- Performs duties of EMT under the departmental medicalguidelines;
- Provides written reports to Assistant Director on all vehicle, station, radio or medical equipment problems or request for repairimmediately;
- Responds to 911 calls and assists in providing emergency medical treatment to the sick and injured;
- Stocks EMS units with supplies andequipment;
- Maintains professional development and continuing education asrequired;
- Performs other duties as deemed necessary or assigned.
Abilities, Knowledge, Skills:
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals;
- Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagramform;
- Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bargraphs;
- Ability to convey and receive detailed or important verbal instructions to and from other workers and the generalpublic;
- Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations;
- Ability to express or exchange ideas by means of verbalcommunication;
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle isrequired;
- Ability to operate all departmental equipment and radios isrequired;
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and proceduremanuals;
- Ability to reliably and predictably carry outduties;
- Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of anorganization;
- Ability to write routine reports andcorrespondence;
- Knowledge of county and city mapping must bemaintained;
- Knowledge of emergency medical care and ambulanceprocedures;
- Knowledge of emergency vehicle operation and radio operations isrequired;
- Knowledge of math, including medical/infusion rate calculations as well as medical documentation;
- Skill in oral and written communication.
Problem Solving: There is problem solving in this position depending on the situation the patient is found in and deciding the appropriate medical care needed.
Decision Making: Must make important medical care decisions in this position. The person must be able to function independently.
Accountability: The employee is not accountable for the department budget but is accountable for their assigned task. Including appropriate medical care, completion of daily and requiredtask. Decisions and actions will be evaluated by supervisor, department director and Quality assurance.
Supervision: There is limited supervision and the employee must function independently with a good understanding of depar mental medical guidelines. Employee does not have supervisory responsibilities over subordinate personnel.
Personal Relationships: Continual contact with other emergency agencies and the public. Must represent themselves and the department in a positive manner.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is exposed less than one third of the time to conditions such moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals and outside weather conditions.
