Position Description

Position Title: Laboratory Technician/Manager Department: Wastewater

Reports To: Superintendent Date: June 2024

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under the general supervision of the Wastewater Superintendent, the Laboratory Technician/Manager has primary

responsibility for laboratory testing, reporting and documenting test results, and provides support toward the

operation, maintenance, and repair of treatment plant equipment. This position performs a variety of highly

skilled technical work conducting and reporting the laboratory analysis of effluent, and plant process samples.

Responsible for following standard procedures for accurate process control and laboratory testing, with emphasis

on maintaining compliance with established license standards through the effective monitoring of the wastewater

treatment process.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

? Make process control decisions after visual and laboratory analysis in consultation with the Superintendent

and Assistant Superintendent.

? Work closely with the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to perform required testing for

wastewater license in accordance with State and Federal testing and laboratory standards. Perform process

testing and record and convey results to operations staff.

? Create yearly testing schedule for department and contract labs.

? Perform annual QA/QC testing to verify accuracy of lab data.

? Coordinates department hazardous communication program.

? Troubleshoot and repair laboratory equipment and process control instruments. Maintain lab parts inventory

and order chemicals for plant process.

? Has rotating on-call responsibilities and responds immediately to requests for assistance.

? Completes routine reports to document activities related to treatment plant operations and any related

laboratory activity.

? Performs special projects and related responsibilities as initiated and requested. Performs other related duties

as assigned.

SKILLS/EXPERIENCE/TRAINING REQUIRED:

? High School or Trade School Diploma with four or more years experience in the operation of a wastewater

facility. Post high school training in wastewater and/or undergraduate course work or degree in life or

environmental sciences preferred.

? Valid State of Maine Class C drivers license .

? State of Maine Grade III-B wastewater treatment plant license preferred.

? Working knowledge of the principles and practices of wastewater operations, including laboratory methods,

and the ability to make practical application of them.

? Ability to work effectively with a diverse staff and to maintain professional relationships with coworkers and

the public.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

? None

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

? Work may be performed outdoors in all types of weather conditions. Frequently exposed to hazardous

conditions including working in and around raw sewage, working from ladders and scaffolding equipment,

near loud noises, in small spaces, and in awkward positions. Employee is often required to stand, walk, talk or

hear, use hands to finger, handle or feel, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, reach with hands and

arms, taste or smell. Employee must frequently lift 10-25 pounds and may occasionally be required to lift 50-

100 pounds.

? May use computers and other office equipment requiring eye-hand coordination and finger dexterity.
