Summary This position serves as the Assistant Hospital Housekeeping Officer for Environmental Management Service (EMS) located at the Fayetteville VA Medical Center in Fayetteville, NC. Responsibilities THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION Major Duties: Serves as a full assistant to the chief, EMS in planning, managing, and conducting effective hospital housekeeping programs and ancillary functions. Exercises supervisory responsibility for the established maintenance and preservation program and the environmental sanitation, pest control, linen and decoration services. Participates in conferences, meetings and committees. Works closely with Infection Control Nurses, Infections Disease Nurses and Physicians for the investigation and development of preventative control and methods for infection containment. Actively participates in Quality Assurance Investigations. Periodically reviews and evaluates contractors' quality control program. Inspects all sanitation assignments including stripping of soiled bed linens and making beds with clean linens, daily collection and removal of soiled linen, daily collection and removal of all wastes, daily collection and removal of sharps, and daily and periodic floor care. Inspects cleanliness of wheeled equipment, patient commode chairs, IV poles, and IVAC machines. Exercises responsibility for leave approval and performance ratings for appropriate subordinate personnel including general foremen and housekeeping supervisors. Assists in the preparation and submission of the Service budgets and justification for personnel, supplies and equipment. Originates purchases, amendments and receipt of all supplies, services and equipment for the Service. Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications Specialized Experience: One (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-11) in the Federal service that provided the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of the position (Assistant Hospital Housekeeping Officer) and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience must include experience in two or more of the following areas, or other work related to the Assistant Hospital Housekeeping Officer position: (1) Experience that demonstrated a practical working knowledge of the basic principles of chemistry, biology and bacteriology as applied to environmental sanitation, infection control and to the choice and use of antimicrobial agents in the disinfection, sanitization and/or sterilization of surfaces and equipment. (2) Experience in laundry and linen management. (3) Experience in interior design management. (4) Experience that demonstrated a knowledge of waste management, including the requirements relating to hazardous, toxic, and infectious wastes and provisions for their final disposition. (5) Experience that demonstrated a knowledge of pest management, including alternative methods of control and the selection and application of chemicals. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Requirements: Incumbent is required to walk constantly, must climb stairs and ladders. Incumbent must be able to bend, stoop, crawl, for extended periods of time. Incumbent must be able to work with arms extended over head for extended periods of time. Incumbent must be able to lift 50+ pounds to shoulder height repeatedly. Incumbent must travel from building to building (30+ buildings on facility and 27 acres of improved grounds) in extreme weather conditions ranging from a high of109 F to lows in the range of -25 F, in order to direct work of the programs assigned. Additional Information Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
