Veterinary Teaching Hospital

At the CSU VTH , we exist to educate the next generation of Veterinarians by providing exceptional veterinary care and service to the community…every day. This work unit exists to provide support services for two large animal facilities at Colorado State University’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital ( VTH ). The three large animal facilities are the Equine/Livestock Hospitals and isolation building.

Position Summary

This position exists to perform cleaning, disinfection, and preparation of the large animal facilities in accordance with hospital protocols and biosecurity standards. This position provides patients with the cleanest and most disease free environment possible 365 days a year. This position also provides nourishment, shelter, and care to the large animal patients in the hospital; repairs and maintains equipment, grounds and shelter facilities; and maintains an inventory of feed supplies and other supplies as needed. This position takes nightly census of the two facilities and works with student hourly workers to compete nightly cleaning duties. This position provides assistance for recovering patients and with patient restraint only as requested by large animal clinicians and veterinary technicians. Assists in the training of Barn Crew student hourly employees. This position may be approached by new students, residents, etc. for information/questions pertaining to Large Animal Facility cleaning standard operating procedures.

This position does not involve any type of medical patient treatments.

This is an essential worker position and must be willing and able to report to work as directed to perform essential and/or emergency services without delay or interruption.

Must have the ability to lift 50-80 pounds

The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by the proposed start date; the department will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Working Schedule: this position will work weekends the majority of the assignment, the Caretaker will be scheduled Saturday and/or Sunday based on their availability, 8-10 hours per day.

Required Job Qualifications

  • GED or High School Diploma or equivalent.

  • Must have the ability to lift 50-80 pounds regularly.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.

  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by the proposed start date; the department will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • One year of cleaning experience for large animals preferably in a veterinary laboratory, breeding or boarding facility, or veterinary hospital.

  • Clean, disinfect, and utilize various chemicals as instructed and stock feed/supplies within the large animal facilities.

  • Work with student hourly workers to clean and disinfect treatment areas.

  • Clean/disinfect occasional accidental spills (antifreeze, oils, infectious animal droppings, blood, etc.).

  • Help prepare for and perform in-depth cleaning and disinfecting of the Equine and Livestock Barns as well as the breezeway.

  • Contact clinicians or students assigned to infectious patients to identify all areas affected by the contamination that require disinfection.

  • Assists in the training of Barn Crew Student Hourly workers.

Duty/Responsibility

  • Perform routine maintenance on three high pressure washers, two tractors, electric sweeper, and a variety of hand tools.

  • Safely operate truck and trailers for transportation of client animals and animals from outside of the facility.

  • Operate tractors, a forklift, front-end loader, pick-up and trailer.

  • Complete minor maintenance repairs/painting (e.g. repair departmental equipment; gates, chutes, fencing, waterers, etc.) and/or communicate repair needs to VTH Maintenance department if unable to complete repairs.

  • Following VTH protocol, position contacts supervisor after normal business hours or on weekends for immediate facility repair needs/emergencies (e.g. pipe burst/clogged drains, flooding, electrical hazards, natural gas leaks, etc.)

  • Perform other tasks as assigned by supervisor as determined by VTH needs/protocols.

  • Provide animal restraint when required, and dispose of deceased animals.

  • Must contact the clinician if any significant problems (e.g.; post-operative problems with large animals from surgery, broken legs, paralysis or severe pain) are observed.

  • Take nightly census of the two facilities and coordinate with other staff and hourlies to prioritize work for the night.

  • Communicates and coordinates with supervisor, clinicians, students and technicians for any special needs, or procedures that may be required.

  • This position talks with area technicians each night to determine if any emergency cases are expected to arrive in order to prioritize duties.

  • Performs other tasks as assigned by supervisor as determined by VTH needs.
