Description of Work Unit
The Colorado State Forest Service is an agency of Colorado State University ( CSU ), Colorado’s land grant institution of higher education, and is housed, organizationally, in the Warner College of Natural Resources. The CSFS
provides staffing to the Division of Forestry for the Colorado Department of Natural Resources. The CSFS has 18 field units throughout the state, with a State Office located in Fort Collins on one of the foothills campuses of CSU .

Position Summary
Data collection for monitoring existing FRWRM projects including overstory, understory, fuels, canopy cover and growth habits
Navigating to field plots and taking accurate data under the supervision of a crew leader
Communicating with members of the public when in the field
Operating terrestrial laser scanner as needed for ongoing projects (training will occur upon employment)
This position requires hiking and carrying field equipment most hours of the workday
Occasional camping will be required
The employee should be able to work in adverse weather conditions, steep/rough terrain, and with minimal supervision
Extensive travel throughout the state to different monitoring projects associated with the Forest Restoration Wildfire Risk Mitigation ( FRWRM ) grant program (lodging provided)
Position Minimum Qualifications
Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date
Pursuing or completed degree in forestry or related natural resources field
Ability to operate 4-wheel drive vehicles in variable weather and road conditions
Ability and willingness to work long hours with occasional evening and weekend duties (work based on a 40-hour work week)
Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team
Preferred Qualifications
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and written
One season of field experience
One or more seasons using forestry measurement equipment including d-tapes, laser hypsometers, clinometers, go-no-go gauges, transect tapes, compasses
Experience in the utilization of Microsoft Suite (especially Excel), ArcGIS Suite, Avenza or GPS
