Description of Work Unit

Founded in 1870, Colorado State University is among the nation’s leading research universities and enrolls approximately 32,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. The Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology at CSU offers a high quality research and learning environment. Faculty research accomplishments have been recognized nationally and internationally in the areas of biochemistry and molecular, cellular, and structural biology.

Position Summary

The Research Associate I/II will prepare buffers, stock solutions of various reagents, and growth media for bacteria and yeast cells, as well as culture bacteria, yeast and human cells using solid and liquid media. The Research Associate I/II will obtain pure DNA by mini-prep and maxi-prep processes, introduce DNA into cells by transformation or transfection procedures, purify recombinant proteins from bacteria, and perform PCR and cloning. Running agarose gel and SDS - PAGE electrophoresis for DNA and proteins, carrying out western-blotting experiments, culturing primary mouse bone marrow cells, and performing confocal fluorescence microscopy are among other varied research related task this person will be delegated performing. Administrative duties will include but are not limited to placing orders for reagents and consumables, general laboratory upkeep by maintaining lab supplies at efficient levels, cleaning and autoclaving lab glassware (together with undergraduate students). The Research Associate I/II may be a mentor and guide for undergraduate students with their experiments and lab duties.

The successful candidate may be eligible for a signing bonus of up to $2,000.

Required Job Qualifications

Research Associate I Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science

Research Associate II Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science plus three years of relevant professional experience

OR

  • Recent Master’s degree and no other significant professional experience

Preferred Job Qualifications

Practical experience with some of the following is preferred:

  • Preparation of buffers and other solutions of defined molarity.

  • UV-vis Spectroscopy.

  • Protein and DNA electrophoresis ( SDS - PAGE and agarose gels).

  • Use of pH meter.

  • PCR and cloning.

  • Culturing bacteria and/or yeast cells on solid and in liquid selective media.

  • Transforming DNA into bacteria and/or yeast cells.

  • Recombinant protein purification from bacteria.

  • DNA purification using mini-prep and maxi-prep.

  • Western-blotting.

  • Fluorescence microscopy.

  • Pull-down and other protein-protein interaction assays.

  • Mammalian cell culture.

  • Basic statistical analysis of data.

  • Graphical representation of data.
