Medtronic Principal Medical Affairs Specialist in Fridley, Minnesota

This position, Principal Medical Affairs Specialist, will have two primary responsibilities:

  • To interact with patients, investigate complaints that adverse health outcomes resulted from the use of company products, provide information to patients, and resolve their complaints.

  • To collaborate with Medtronic legal administrative professionals, paralegals, e-discovery specialists, and lawyers as a nurse-consultant on claims brought by patients who are represented by counsel and/or have filed lawsuits, and to assist in the investigation of those claims and lawsuits.

When interacting with patients, the Principal Medical Affairs Specialist will embody Medtronic’s “patients first” philosophy by being responsive, showing patience and empathy, and providing accurate medical and product information. The Principal Medical Affairs Specialist will develop strategies for resolving patient requests for compensation and follow through on those strategies, often with minimal supervision.

When working with Medtronic legal administrative professionals, paralegals, e-discovery specialists, and in-house counsel, the Principal Medical Affairs Specialist will serve as an integral part of the legal team, sharing specialized knowledge of medicine and of Medtronic products.

This position will report to the Director – Litigation.

Location: Twin Cities (MN)-based individuals preferred for hybrid (in office three days per week) position. Individuals in other U.S. locations may be considered for 100% remote work if applicant qualifies under Medtronic remote work policy.

A Day in the Life

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

  • Receive referrals from patient services functions of patients with complaints that adverse health outcomes resulted from the use of company products.

  • Interact with patients by phone, email, and written correspondence with empathy; provide accurate medical and product information while making clear you are not serving as a health care provider to patients.

  • Investigate patient requests for compensation and lawsuits by

o Consulting with knowledgeable individuals in Medtronic’s operating units about Medtronic products that are the subjects of patient complaints

o Reviewing product literature

o Requesting, collecting, and maintaining patient medical records in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations

o Comparing patient-provided information to known product information and patient medical records

o Reviewing returned product lab analyses

o Using reference library and peer review literature

  • Draft or co-draft (with Medtronic counsel) written responses to patient requests for compensation, including:

o Chronologies and other summaries of medical records

o Summaries of product capabilities, potential adverse events, analyses of returned products, peer review literature, and instructions for use

  • Participate in regular meetings with Medtronic legal and clinical-scientific personnel and others regarding patient requests for compensation and lawsuits

  • Track and communicate status of patient requests for compensation and lawsuits

  • Track financial outcomes and implications achieved by resolving patient requests for compensation

  • Assist patient services functions with policies and training

  • Assist Office of Medical Affairs and Global Quality as requested

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with 7+ years of clinical nursing experience to include familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR), or, an advanced degree with 5+ years of experience

Nice to Have

  • Valid state-registered nurse (RN) license in state of residence strongly preferred

  • Experience in healthcare management

  • Experience in legal field

  • Legal nurse or case management experience

  • Specialized knowledge of neurosurgery and orthopedic spine surgery

  • Ability to work independently and with minimum supervision

  • Empathy for patients in challenging medical circumstances

  • Integrity and strong ethical center

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).
