Job Description:

NOTE:This is a part-time position at .5 FTE (20 hours per week) with night and weekend hours

JOB SUMMARY

The Marston Science Library (MSL) Weekend Access Services Assistant functions as a team member of the Marston Science Library Access Services Unit. During the fall and spring semesters, regular workdays and hours for the position are: Friday, 5:00pm-10:30pm; Saturday, 1:00pm-8:30pm; and Sunday, 5:00pm - 1:30am. During the summer semester, regular hours are Friday, 4:00pm-9:30pm; Saturday, 11:00am-6:30pm; and Sunday, 3:00pm - 11:30pm. Schedule will be adjusted during intersessions, holidays, and when there are other changes in the George A. Smathers Libraries’ public service hours.

Primary duties include providing supervisory level desk coverage at the MSL Service Desk and closing procedures on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. This position is focused on providing customer service at the service desk during night and weekend hours including providing reference services and answering questions by phone, email and in person using specific library tools and equipment. In addition, the position contributes to other aspects of running a large academic library such as locating lost or missing items, reporting any building or equipment issues, and participating in special projects.

RESPONSIBILITIES

MSL Service Desk – Circulation

  • Communicates effectively with and provides a high level of customer service to a diverse group of patrons

  • Provides courteous assistance with a variety of research tools

  • Provides tactful and timely assistance with patron inquiries by telephone, email, and in person interaction

  • Assists patrons with circulation transactions and account questions using the current Integrated Library System (ILS)

  • Loans and returns library items and course reserve materials

  • Provides secondary supervision to student staff assigned to the desk during scheduled evening and weekend hours. This includes training, coaching and directing daily work

  • Creates temporary guest accounts

  • Consults and advises patrons with questions about the Ares course reserve process

  • Answers directional, circulation, and basic reference questions, referring when necessary

  • Assists patrons with printers/scanners and other technology within the library as appropriate

  • Consults with patrons regarding technology-related questions associated with the equipment that is circulated at the desk (e.g. iPads, cables, tools, etc.)

  • Responsible for the service desk and building during desks shifts. Responds to and communicates necessary building information/issues and emergency situations that arise during desk shifts to supervisor and/or other MSL staff. Reports immediate building issues to work management

  • Works with other closing staff member and security staff to perform closing procedures.

  • Monitors exit gate alarms as patrons enter/exit the building

  • Provides service desk backup support when other staff members are absent

  • Covers additional shifts during exam periods when the library has extended hours

Reference Services

  • Provides reference services in person and by telephone

  • Assists patrons in use of electronic resources, online catalog, and basic reference materials and methods;

    provides appropriate referral to area and subject specialists

  • Assists patrons with reservation system for study rooms and specialized equipment

  • Answers or refers Interlibrary Loan and UBorrow questions

    Access Services Support

  • Conducts thorough library searches for books, journals, documents, and other library owned items reported as lost or missing by patrons and library staff and retrieves UBorrow requests

  • Processes patron recall and hold requests

  • Processes UBorrow hold items

  • Processes item not on shelf requests for patrons and assists with searches for missing items

  • Monitors and reports circulating technology issues to the Circulating Technology and Collections Supervisor

  • Monitors service desk supplies and forms, requests or replaces items when needed

  • Monitors and troubleshoots public printers/scanners and reports issues to Academic Technology

  • Assists with special projects

  • Processes mail for Marston

Other Duties

  • Participates in special projects and performs other duties as assigned

  • Serves on committees as appointed and participates in staff development opportunities as appropriate

Expected Salary:

$16.39 minimum hourly rate; The Smathers Libraries offer a salary commensurate with experience and credentials.

Minimum Requirements:

High School diploma or equivalent and seven years of library, or relevant experience; or an Associate’s degree and five years of relevant experience; or a Bachelor’s degree and three years of relevant experience; or a Master’s degree and one year of relevant experience; or any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

  • Excellent customer service skills; ability to interact with diverse library clientele and co-workers in a professional manner

  • Evidence of excellent interpersonal skills including oral and written communication

  • Strong oral and written communication skills

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively to accomplish goals

  • Flexibility, and ability to adapt and work in a rapidly changing academic environment

  • Strong time management skills, organization skills, and attention to detail

  • Ability to interpret call number schemes, retrieve items from the shelves and reshelve items

  • Basic computer skills and experience with Microsoft Software

  • Ability to quickly learn appropriate technology
