Summary

As sustainability continues to grow in importance and complexity, CHS is looking for EU Sustainability Lead for the European region. Based in Geneva, you will play a crucial role in driving sustainability initiatives, projects and strategy in Europe, ensuring alignment with the enterprise strategy, collaborating closely with legal, government affairs, and business unit leaders. This role will serve as the subject matter expert on the EU Green Deal and regulations and directives, including CSRD, EUDR, CSDDD, and CBAM.

Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively with sustainability leadership, legal, compliance, finance and government affairs to align sustainability objectives in Europe with the enterprise sustainability strategy.

  • Support and lead assessments, such as the double materiality assessment, and gap analysis. Co-develop strategic action plans to address findings and gaps. Co-develop processes and polices needed to effectively integrate into the EU strategy.

  • Develop and maintain a portfolio of sustainability projects in the EU. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify, prioritize, and execute projects that align with the company's sustainability goals and objectives. Monitor project progress and milestones to ensure timely and successful delivery of outcomes.

  • Support emissions inventory work, including data collection, analysis, and reporting, to track progress towards emission reduction goals and regulatory compliance. Support the development of reduction efforts and implement across the European business.

  • Serve as the subject matter expert on rules and directives related to the EU Green Deal, providing updates and recommendations to internal stakeholders and work collaboratively with teams in the US and Brazil to develop action plans for compliance.

  • Engage with industry and trade associations to stay informed about the emerging rules and directives related to the EU Green Deal and follow sustainability trends in the European market. Inform internal stakeholders and provide recommendations to integrate the impacts of the rules and directives into business planning and decision-making.

  • Support the development of the annual sustainability report and other disclosures. Serve as the main POC for content from the EU. Lead the review and audit processes.

  • As a quickly evolving space and with changing regulatory needs, support the global sustainability team and EU team as needed.

Minimum Qualifications (required)

  • Master degree in engineering, climate-related or environmental science, natural resources, accounting, agronomy, soil science, communication.

  • 7+ years work experience in one or more of the following areas: sustainability, environmental management, agriculture, energy, natural resource management, human rights, forest management or related field

  • 4+ years work experience in agriculture or food or related field

  • 4+ years work experience in sustainable and regenerative agriculture

  • Understanding of and experience with the EU Green Deal and related rules and directives

  • Experience with sustainability reporting & disclosures

  • Experience with sustainability related industry associations and policy development

  • Excellent written and oral communication; ability to take complex topics and communicate to non-sustainability professionals

  • Ability and interest in public speaking

  • Native or fluent in English, French German and Spanish a plus

Work Experience

  • 2+ years working on sustainability reporting frameworks such as CDP, GRI, TCFD or similar framework

  • 2+ years working on deforestation in South America

  • 2+ years experience in human rights

  • Experience conducting a materiality assessment within a global organization

  • Understanding of European policy development process

  • Engagement with NGOs and trade and industry associations
