Universities Space Research Association Associate Engineer, Aerospace (PHaSER) in Greenbelt, Maryland

The USRA Science and Technology Institute (STI), through the PHaSER cooperative agreement, is seeking a full-time Aerospace Engineer who would be located at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. This candidate will research space weather science by conducting experiments on the International Space Station (ISS). More specifically, this candidate will research energetic proton precipitation during explosive soral events and resulting geomagnetic storms. Candidate will expand the research to earth’s ring using data from the STORIE mission; the earth’s aurora using data from the LAMP sounding rocket electron precipitation experiments; and the earth’s LEO atmosphere using data from the mini-INMS instrument. The candidate will be involved in laboratory testing and calibration of new space weather instruments to generate calibrated data for space weather application to earth-moon-mars exploration.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Conducting laboratory testing, data analysis and calibration

  • Updating space weather models connecting the Sun-Earth system.

Required Qualifications:

  • Expertise in study of the space weather science

  • Experience with scientific data analysis

  • Excellent communication, problem solving, and critical thinking skills

  • Willingness to learn new skills. 

Education: Bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering

Experience: Candidates with experience performing this type of work are highly preferred.

Working Conditions: This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, etc. extensive online usage. This is largely a sedentary role.
