Job Description

IFF is looking for a Health & Safety Manager to join our team at the IFF Hazlet, NJ site.

This IFF location manufactures fragrance compounds that can be found in consumer products that people across the U.S. and around the world use every day.

In this role you will be responsible for the overall implementation and management of site safety systems to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and corporate health and safety standards including all requirements of the Process Safety Management Program. The Health and Safety Manager works closely with all facility personnel to ensure full compliance with OSHA General Industry standards and IFF safety policies. This position reports to the Site Manager.

Responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Manage the site’s Health and Safety policies including OSHA’s Process Safety Management program. Maintain compliance with regulatory requirements and Corporate Health and Safety standards including OSHA’s Process Safety Management regulation.

  • Implement improvements to safety systems in order to maintain compliance with regulations and improve Health and Safety performance. Manage projects as assigned.

  • Organize, lead, and participate in activities that promote employee engagement in Health and Safety including the PSM program. Building and maintaining a strong safety culture is vital to the overall success of the safety program.

  • Manage site incident investigation program, ensuring proper classification, thorough root cause investigations and appropriate corrective actions are implemented to prevent recurrence. Work with the site manager and the medical case manager on ensuring proper medical treatment is provided to injured or sick personnel. This includes the work-related status of all personnel after medical treatment has been provided.

  • Provide in-plant support to site leadership, operators, mechanics, contractors, and technical staff to ensure that work is completed within the requirements of all safety policies including policies regarding Process Safety Management.

  • Conduct routine Gemba walks (observe and engage) to provide recognition, coaching, collaboration, and training to maintain compliance with all site safety programs.

  • Manage the site’s Process Safety Management programs:

  • Lead facilitator for all Process Hazard Analysis studies.

  • Manage all Management of Change requests to completion.

  • Conduct Pre-Start Up Safety reviews for all implemented MOC’s.

  • Assist in the management of the site’s Mechanical Integrity Program.

  • Create an annual safety training program that is made up of computer-based training and classroom type training topics to ensure compliance with regulatory training requirements. Ensure PSM training for all applicable personnel is effective and completed in accordance with the PSM regulation.

  • Work with the third-party medical provider and develop an annual medical exam schedule for all affected employees including respirator evaluations, and respirator fit testing.

  • Ensure that clear and effective emergency plans are in place in such a way that risks for people and IFF are minimized. Update and maintain site’s Emergency Response Plan.

  • Manage Hazlet emergency response teams, which include Confined Space, HazMat, First Aid, and Fire Brigade.

  • Other duties and projects as assigned.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in science and or engineering with two or more years’ experience with managing workplace safety including the OSHA PSM standard.

  • Demonstrated Health and Safety functional/technical expertise with strong working knowledge of OSHA General Industry regulations including OSHA’s Process Safety Management regulation.

  • Excellent leadership skills and ability to work independently and collaboratively.

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills: demonstrated ability to work effectively, professionally, and respectfully in a team-based environment to involve peers, customers, line management and technical competency experts.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to train personnel as it relates to OSHA and Corporate-wide safety requirements.

  • Experience implementing & maintaining site wide safety-related programs including PSM.

  • Computer and technical literacy; demonstrated skill in use of PHA Works (or equivalent PHA software), Microsoft Office software (i.e., Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, SharePoint, Excel).

  • A minimum requirement for this U.S. based position is the ability to work legally in the United States.
