JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

A full-time research technician position is immediately available in the Zarnescu laboratory at the Penn State University College of Medicine, Department of Cellular and Molecular Physiology, in Hershey, PA, to study mechanisms of and develop therapeutic strategies for neurodegenerative diseases.

Specifically, the candidate will work on an integrated research project combining molecular, genetic and imaging approaches to elucidate molecular mechanisms of disease and identify small molecules with neuroprotective potential using Drosophila models of disease, and human cells and tissues. Other responsibilities include maintaining Drosophila stocks, providing technical support to laboratory members, maintaining equipment and ensuring safety guidelines are followed. The candidate should be familiar with common biological laboratory research techniques, should be self-motivated and willing to learn new research methods and approaches. Experience with Drosophila genetics is preferred.

  • Set up genetic crosses (Drosophila), culture cells and generate samples using immunoprecipitation, imaging and other techniques such as mass spectrometry, western blotting, qPCR and confocal microscopy. Use various phenotypic readouts (e.g., locomotor function, lifespan, etc) to validate targets in vivo. Apply similar techniques to identify and characterize neuroprotective small molecules in vivo and in vitro.

  • Maintain Drosophila stocks, order reagents and supplies for the lab. Organize common areas, including cell culture and fly rooms. Maintain and calibrate all laboratory equipment and instruments. Keep inventory of chemicals and general lab records. Oversee safety regulations and compliance in the laboratory. Keep an accurate record of laboratory procedures and research findings in laboratory notebooks.

  • Provide research support to postdocs and students in the lab.

  • The candidate is expected to present at lab meetings and scientific conferences. Author papers, proposals, presentations and reports in order to disseminate findings to the larger research community

  • May be responsible for operation of a specialized research area or laboratory

  • May supervise staff members, including hiring, development, and performance management

Minimum Education & Experience

Bachelor's Degree and 1+ years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience

This is a limited-term position funded for one year from date of hire, with possibility of refunding.

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$38,300.00 - $55,500.00
