MRI, a woman-owned Technologies and Engineering Services company, has an exciting opportunity for anElectrical Design Engineerat NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, TX. We are looking for individuals with creative ideas, diverse backgrounds, and a passion for human space exploration to take on this exciting challenge.

Perform a variety of electrical engineering assignments to support project requirements and the development, design, installation, operations and maintenance of existing facility systems that are located at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, TX 77058.

Projects range from simple single discipline to complex multi-discipline. Fast-paced environment, with multiple projects to be worked simultaneously.

As anElectrical Design Engineeryou will:

  • Must have a solid foundation in basic engineering principles. With minimal supervision, responsible for developing the concept, basis of design and technical design solutions to maintain operability of assigned systems and components.
  • Design of low-voltage and medium-voltage electrical distribution systems including building and site services for various types of systems and components using Arc Flash / ETAP. The design includes preparing design drawings or sketches (single line diagrams, plans, wiring schematics, control schematic, panel schedules, etc.), technical specifications, power system analyses and Statements of Work
  • Develop plans, processes, procedures, functional and data requirements analysis, system analysis, and documentation preparation. Apply cost effective repairs, modifications, upgrades or replacements.
  • Familiarity with National Electrical Code (NFPA 70), Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace (NFPA 70E), National Electric Safety Code and other applicable NFPA, IEEE and industry standards.
  • Detailed design of electrical system physical layouts, power system phase and ground fault protection relays, lightning and switching protection, conduit and cable plans, substation ground grid design and analysis.
  • Candidate must be capable of laying out equipment in limited space with innovative design concepts while making sure not to violate codes and standards.
  • Perform electrical systems design - including switchgear, switchboards, motor control centers, variable frequency drives, generators, transformers, distribution panels, and other electrical distribution system.
  • Perform field inspections of electrical systems and attend system start-up field activities.
  • May assume a team lead role for the work group as well as train and guide other engineers.
  • Coordinate with and support other Design Engineers, Operations and Maintenance staff.
  • Update existing Configured Drawings to incorporate system modifications. Ensure that assigned projects are completed on time and within approved scope and budget.
  • Interface and coordinate with internal and external customers from project initiation and requirements development to design review and working group meetings in order to ensure compliance with project requirements.
  • Provides technical support to ROM (Rough Order of Magnitude) estimates for projects, as well as risk assessments to support proper project prioritization.
  • Prepare, deliver and submit technical presentations in support of planning efforts. Verify and comply with engineering documentation standards and test procedures. Perform other position related duties as assigned.Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program and a minimum of 5-7 years of experience in the areas defined in this job posting.
  • Will need to provide college transcripts prior to hire.
  • MUST have a PE (Professional Engineer) Certification (Texas)
  • Proficient with Auto CAD.
  • Arch Flash experience is a plus.
  • Existing Facilities Experience.
  • Working knowledge of comput r systems and integrated software application programs.
  • The ability to investigate, troubleshoot, and design solutions to problems in operational facilities.
  • Good communication and analytical skills.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a NASA Badge in order to access the worksite.
  • Must be physically fit to perform the required job duties.

Work Environment, Physical Demands and Mental Demands

This position involves work typical of an office environment with no unusual hazards; occasional lifting of equipment; constant sitting with use of computer terminal; constant use of sight abilities while reviewing documents; constant use of speech/hearing abilities for communication; constant mental alertness; must possess planning/organizing skills and must be able to work under deadlines. Field work will consist primarily of site walk downs in support of design projects and system trouble shooting Site hazard training and Personal Protective Equipment are provided.

Proof of U.S. Citizenship or US Permanent Residency is a requirement for this position.

Must be able to complete a U.S. government background investigation.
