Job Description:

This position will be responsible for assisting in studies evaluating entomological risk factors of Florida Culicoides spp. and mosquitoes for Oropouche virus transmission with a focus on vector competence studies that measure horizontal and vertical transmission of the virus.

These studies will be performed in the Biosafety level (BSL)-2 and BSL3 facilities at the UF/IFAS Florida Medical Entomology Laboratory (FMEL) in Vero Beach, FL (https://fmel.ifas.ufl.edu/).

Studies will be performed in coordination with the supervisor for this position, Dr. Barry Alto, Associate Professor.

This is a time-limited contract-funded position available January 1, 2025, through December 31, 2026 (2-years), with the potential for extended employment.

Expected Salary:

$20.00 / hour

Minimum Requirements:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED).

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in a scientific field.

1-2 years of research experience, especially related to mosquitoes,Culicoidesspp., and arboviruses.

Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Experience preparing chemical solutions and working with micropipettes.

Computer skills: knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel) and other relevant computer programs.

Analytical and numerical skills: ability to perform mathematical calculations (add, subtract, multiply, divide) in different units of measurement; ability to use concepts such as fractions, percentages, and ratios.

Excellent organizational skills.

Available to work for 40 hours per week, Monday- Friday.

Willingness to work in general laboratory and biosafety facilities.

Must be highly dependable, detail-oriented, quick to pick up new tasks, and a team player.

Must submit to a background check.
