Role Overview:
This position responsible for maintaining EPA certification and ISO 17025 accreditation for metals analysis. They will also oversee 5 – 8 staff performing elemental analysis using ICP and ICPMS for EPA methods.
Salary Statement:
The salary for this position traditionally starts at $75,010.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.
A Day in the Life:
The essential functions of this role are as follows:
Provide laboratory reports and services to divisional staff, county health agencies, other state agencies and other divisions within the agency.
Set and interpret division standards and policies making sure that employees follow these established guidelines for quality control.
Plan and coordinate training for staff to ensure technical competency and familiarity with all pertinent state and federal laws, rules, and regulations.
Prepare statistical information to support laboratory planning.
Serve as a consultant to customers and others with questions concerning analysis.
Direct and conduct technical research work, develops methods and tests to determine the chemical composition of materials and prepares reports and research conclusions for the division.
May testify in court as an expert witness in cases involving work supervised.
Recruit, select, onboard, and train employees to ensure role responsibilities and expectations are clearly understood while providing opportunities to continue professional development.
Set expectations, measure progress, provide ongoing feedback, and evaluate the performance of employees. Ensure work adheres to quality standards, deadlines, and proper procedures.
Some essential functions of this position may be performed onsite at the agency’s worksite or other assigned worksites while some essential functions of this position may be eligible for work from home authorization in accordance with policy. Remote work authorization is not automatic and is dependent upon operational needs and agency approval.

This position is exempt from overtime compensation for additional work hours which may be required to complete essential functions or other assigned work. Exempt employees may work more than 75 hours in a pay period without additional compensation and must report a minimum of 75 hours per pay period of work hours and/or paid leave taken to receive their base biweekly salary.
What You'll Need for Success:
You must meet the following requirement to be considered for employment:
Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry or other science and at least three (3) years of analytical chemistry testing experience in a regulated laboratory setting, plus two (2) years of supervisory experience in a laboratory setting
Ability to maintain personal competency in the laboratory.
Thorough knowledge of and ability to apply, federal, state, and local laws and regulations pertinent to agency charge.
Extensive knowledge of inspection and laboratory testing procedures and means of interpreting results.
Broad understanding of the purpose of inspection and of chemical testing equipment and their proper usage.
Considerable knowledge of various sciences including chemistry, bacteriology, biology, public health and of chemical characteristics and properties of various materials.
Specialized knowledge of procedures utilized in technical training in areas of inspection, testing, interpretation, and quality control.
Ability to conduct extensive research, interpret and apply other research findings and report all information such as technical letters and memoranda to division staff.
Thorough knowledge of laboratory safety standards and procedures.
Ability to delegate work, set clear direction, and manage workflow.
Ability to effectively give feedback, provide guidance or corrective action, coach, and develop employee skillsets.
Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:
This role may provide direct supervision for one or more staff members.
