NBB was one of the very first departments to combine the study of animal behavior with its neural basis, based on the belief that the interface between them was one of great research potential. The Accounts Coordinator for the Department for Neurobiology and Behavior (NBB) is the point person for financial operations, grants and contracts, purchasing, chemical inventory, capital assets, travel reimbursements and assisting labs with controlled substances. The Accounts Coordinator will:


Establish and maintain positive working relationships with College Business Service Units, University central offices (e.g. Sponsored Financial Services, Payroll, Purchasing), and department faculty, staff, and students. Promote close working relationships with other shared biology unit accounting/finance staff to foster teamwork and collaboration with defining, documenting, and implementing consistent policies and best practices. Utilize Excel and Cornell systems (KFS, OBIEE Dashboards) to complete monthly account reviews and reconciliation. Process close-out activities for all sponsored awards and assist with training new staff and faculty on department operational and financial processes and systems.


Process order requests for department (lab and office supplies, new equipment, etc.), ensure all purchases are allowable on funding source, primary procurement support for department (assist with new p-card applications, receipt uploads, compliance, etc.)


Coordinate with NBB labs to maintain accurate records for controlled substances and communicate federal, state, and university policies and procedures for purchasing, storing, and disposing of controlled substances. Maintain Vertere, Cornell's Chemical Inventory System for department chemicals (add/delete chemicals for NBB labs) and attend multi-department Vertere super user meetings.


Required Qualifications:

  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
  • Associates degree and 2-4 years' relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong computer, typing and mathematical skills required. Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook is essential. Intermediate experience with Excel is ideal. Must have the ability to learn various business software used by the University (e-SHOP, KFS, Concur, etc.). Training will be provided for Cornell systems.
  • Position requires the ability to work well independently and also with a team of administrative professionals. Must have strong customer service skills and be able to communicate effectively with a broad range of people. Reliability and sound judgment are required. Good sense of humor a plus!
  • Additional required qualifications include being organized and having the ability to take initiative and be proactive. Must have an aptitude and interest to solve problems independently. Excellent time management skills, and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks during busy periods. Has the capacity to anticipate needs and plan accordingly.
  • Need to be flexible and receptive to learning new ideas and approaches; accuracy in spelling, grammar, numerical calculations, and attention to detail are necessary. Must be comfortable working in an environment where change in process/procedure is the norm.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Background or training in generally accepted accounting principles.
  • A knack for improving efficiencies is highly desirable.
