Argonne National Laboratory Senior Benefits and System Specialist (Hybrid) in Lemont, Illinois

Our Total Rewards team at Argonne National Laboratory is seeking a Senior Benefits and HRIS System Specialist. This role will have two components, which includes strategically planning, designing, and maintaining various benefits as well as ensuring that the Workday Benefits module facilitates all Argonne Benefit plans effectively.

HRMS system, Workday, responsibilities include:

  • Independently sustain and optimize the Workday Benefits module consistent with identified requirements under minimal direction.

  • Serve as the primary technical resource for managing the Workday Benefits module through configuration, development of business process, testing and implementation of benefits features of the Workday system and related business processes; includes the annual Open Enrollment process, related communications regarding the use of the system for Open Enrollment, etc.

  • Work with respective benefit providers to develop, implement and optimize integrations.

  • Consult with the HRIS team in areas that have potential impacts across other areas of the Workday system.

  • Provide ongoing training to Benefits staff on their role and business process execution in Workday.

  • Improve the efficiency of and customer satisfaction with all centralized benefits processes by implementing and enhancing Workday to enable and support these processes.

Benefits responsibilities include:

  • Plan, design, develop, evaluate, and implement various laboratory-related benefit plans, coordinating with internal teams and external vendors

  • Conduct studies and projects that may affect and involve cross functional departments within the organization

  • Manage relationships with benefits broker and provide innovative benefit offerings and suggestions to leadership

  • Partner with other members of the benefits team as well as the Total Rewards Director on all strategic benefit initiatives

Position Requirements

  • Experience with Workday’s functionality for configuration of business processes, or a similar HRMS system, creation of calculated fields, security as it relates to benefits, configuration of benefit plans and rules within the system

  • If HRMS experience has not been in Workday, the selected candidate must be willing to go through Workday training upon hire

  • Experience and knowledge of healthcare; retirement, life insurance, long term disability, flexible spending, business travel, and long-term care plans and various leave policies

  • Experience and knowledge of the laws and regulations that affect the Argonne benefit plans (e.g. ACA, ERISA, COBRA, HIPAA, TEFRA, DEFRA, HMO Act, ADEA, EGTRRA).

  • Ability to learn and understand Argonne benefit plans to be able to translate the benefit plans into configured Workday Benefit plans.

  • Ability to understand complex issues that require interpretation of new or changes to existing regulations, internal plan changes or vendor contract changes and implementing these requirements into Workday.

  • Effective oral and written communication skills

  • Effective collaboration skills across multiple departments

  • An understanding of basic accounting principles preferred

  • Effective interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to lead projects involving diverse groups of individuals, organize and conduct meetings

  • Ability to plan and implement various administrative activities, ability to handle all phases of assigned special projects (planning, development, and implementation).

  • Experience working with computer software including Workday (or similar HRIS system), Equifax 1094/5, MS Office Suite

  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills with focus on attention to detail

  • Considerable ability to work independently using good judgment and organization skills

  • Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity and teamwork

  • PT4: Bachelor’s degree and 6+ years of experience or a Master’s degree and 4+ years of experience, or equivalent
