MIT Lincoln Laboratory Software Systems Engineer-Technical Staff in Lexington, Massachusetts

The Embedded and Open Systems Group applies our expertise to developing software and processing architectures for aircraft, ground vehicles, unmanned systems, sensors, radios of all sizes, ground stations, and bases operating across the globe. We develop cutting-edge solutions for the nation's needs in the areas of embedded computing, distributed systems and global battle management for the future. We succeed by participating in all program phases of system analysis, architecture definition, design, prototyping, field testing, and ultimately the transfer of our technology. We get to see our technology make its way from early concepts all the way to flying on test aircraft or fielded at test sites.

Position Description

We need talented, experienced engineers who bring fresh ideas from all areas, including large-scale system design, analytical methods, and dynamic simulation across a range of information system architectures. To be successful in this position, you must be versatile, innovative, self-disciplined, and highly collaborative in high-performing, multi-disciplinary teams spanning MIT LL and the broader Department of Defense (DoD) community.

What you’ll do:

  • Interface directly with Government sponsor counterparts for program software support

  • Identify areas of technical risk for the DoD, define architectural solutions and explore prototyping opportunities

  • Give technical briefings to your teams, the MIT LL community, our sponsors, and the larger national security community for awareness, evaluation, and feedback on our efforts

  • Engage and help manage exchanges with technical counterparts in industry, academia, and other non-Government partners

  • Stay current with emerging technology trends and how they can be applied to meet business needs

  • Coordinate with other MIT LL teams to review potential solution options in the development of software products

To be successful in this role you will need:

  • Doctorate in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related fields. In lieu of a Doctorate, a Masters and 5 years of directly related experience will be considered

  • Deep knowledge in one or more of the following areas: graph theory, AI/ML, distributed systems theory, data science, signal processing, autonomy

  • Experience developing modern, scalable, modular, open software architecture

  • Experience with Agile development methodologies

  • Able to obtain and maintain a government (DoD) security clearance

  • U.S. Citizenship is required

You will stand out if you also have:

  • Experience taking a lead role in building complex software systems that have been successfully delivered to customers

  • Knowledge of professional software engineering practices and best practices for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations

  • Experience with collaboration (Confluence, etc.) and issue tracking (JIRA, etc.) tools
