Los Alamos National Laboratory Senior Fuel Fabrication Engineer (R&D Engineer 3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Materials Science in Radiation and Dynamics Extremes Group (MST-8) of Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) invites you to join our team providing support for our National Security Mission and discover why we attract the best and brightest minds in the world. MST-8 is seeking an R&D Engineer 3 to support the Low Enriched Fuel Fabrication Facility (LEFFF) as it transitions to an operational environment.

R&D Engineer 3 ($122,300 - $206,300)

The successful candidate will lead a diverse set of activities across multiple engineering disciplines that will solidify operational start-up of the LEFFF facility and interface with internal and external customers, to ensure alignment of LEFFF with the energy security mission of LANL. Additionally, the candidate will lead and deliver significant programmatic milestones and work closely with partners to coordinate materials processing and set a rhythm for production deliverables. The R&D Engineer 3 will be able to direct project assignments to further key organizational goals, develop and implement project management plans, including scope, schedule, and budget, for small to moderate projects and/or major project tasks.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with project management, as well as devising operational strategies to improve quality and productivity in a manufacturing facility by troubleshooting material processes in a high pace environment.

  • Experience implementing a variety of new radiological material processing systems for nuclear fuel production (at low-scale manufacturing operations), and applying detailed understanding of enriched material handling and safeguards, including LANMAS (Local Area Network Material Accountability System).

  • Experience defining deliverables at the project or major task level while troubleshooting daily logistics, technical and operational challenges, to ensure operability of processes within LEFFF and support internal and external partners.

  • Experience mentoring diverse teams of technologists and engineers to perform at the highest level.

  • Detailed understanding of DOE program structures (e.g., financial management systems)

  • Ability to obtain a Q clearance

Education/Experience : Position requires a Master's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications :

  • Advanced knowledge regarding the application of materials synthesis to diverse radiological fuel fabrication techniques.

  • Ability to correlate material product characteristics with process response and implement methods to improve processes in a manufacturing environment.

  • Advanced knowledge of radiological plant engineering.

  • Detailed knowledge of fuel fabrication lines.

Work Location : The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment : Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements : To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test : The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position : Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
