Job Description

Analytical Associate Scientist. The Trace Impurities Innovation (TII) Section is seeking a highly motivated/dynamic individual to work in a disruptive interdisciplinary organization encompassing trace analysis platforms, biology, biochemistry, and digital activation to produce chemical transparency knowledge about our raw materials, intermediates and finished products that drive innovation as well as solve tough problems across multiple brand categories. This employee should have Liquid Chromatography – Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) expertise and great collaboration skills to actively contribute to seamless multidisciplinary teams that generate data-based assurance of quality, compliance, and perceived safety for all P&G Brands. The TII laboratories house most of the top-end mass spectrometry instrumentation in the Company and are often the final resource for organic chemical analysis not achievable by other labs. As a result, TII provides critical measurements for human & environmental safety as well as creates s-curve driving measurement platforms, enabling (e.g.) “radical chemical transparency” of our products.

Important Responsibilities of Job:

Cocreate, execute, summarize, integrate, peer-review, and report R&D studies leveraging liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and other trace analytical techniques within TII Section, to deliver multiple projects across business units. The person in this role will independently devise/execute method development & validation of quantitative LC-MS/MS assays with topline technical guidance of the section technical leaders. It is a lab-focused position requiring superb attention to detail, abilities to maintain/improve research processes, great collaboration skills with cross-functional teams (toxicologists, biologists, data scientists, analytical, etc.), and significant hands-on experience with trace analysis quantitation (sample preparation tools, lab systems, MS instrument maintenance/troubleshooting, quality procedures, etc.).

Job Qualifications

Job Qualification 1:

Applied laboratory experience/proficiency using LC-MS and related techniques. Especially useful expertise includes validating and executing analytical methodologies, general analytical chemistry skills, working knowledge of various sample preparation techniques and liquid handling instrumentation (Liquidators, etc.).

Job Qualification 2:

Strong biological & biochemical foundations to solve complex living systems experimental issues. Be able to co-create novel environmental & in-vitro studies to assess product safety.

Job Qualification 3:

Practical experience generating/delivering: (a) Ultra-trace LC-MS/MS methods to characterize/quantitate substances for human and environmental safety evaluations, troubleshoot manufacturing processes, create/defend claims, and drive R&D initiatives; (b) Analytical strategies to evaluate toxicity of impurities in RMs according to local/int’l regulations; and (c) In-lab chemical models to enable go/no-go R&D decisions. Demonstrated abilities working independently to troubleshoot instrument/method issues, analyzing critical data to draw conclusions, and effectively communic ating experimental results.

Job Qualification 4:

Demonstrated Technical Leadership. Partner with technologists of diverse backgrounds to optimize the utilization, business impact and leading-edge position to establish our MS capabilities/methodologies as the industrial “gold standard” for substances of interest measurements. Envision analytical opportunities as well as take calculated risks based on key data and good judgment to achieve innovative results. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define experimental designs/priorities. Generate reports summarizing data.

Job Qualification 5:

Experienced in Laboratory Capability Management. Expertise developing and maintaining Standard Operating Procedures, instrumental/operational qualifications (IQ/OQs), training protocols, validation and study reports, reference standard systems, sample preparation equipment, etc.

Job Qualification 6:

Computer skills. Familiarity and proficiency in instrument control software across liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry vendors. Competence with Laboratory Information Management Systems and Electronic Lab Notebooks. Data analysis using off the shelf or custom software, generating representations of data for reports.

Job Qualification 7:

Ability to Embrace Change. Seeks out new ideas for doing things better, no matter where they come from. Can manage multiple priorities at any given time and is adaptable to different approaches to projects/people. Ability to perform well under business pressure and tight deadlines. Adept to flow to the work due to changing project needs. Drive continual lab improvements of a state-of-the-art facility.

Job Qualification 8:

B.S./M.S. chemistry degrees, or equivalent experience, in the analytical sciences, or a closely related field. Knowledge of Good Laboratory Practices or Good Manufacturing Practices is helpful but not necessary.
