Overview

The Wastewater division of the Public Works & Mobility department is seeking a Solids Handling Operator. This position is integral to the safe and effective operation of the wastewater treatment facilities. By fulfilling duties diligently and in accordance with regulations, the Solids Handling Operator helps protect public health and the environment while supporting the essential function of wastewater treatment.

**After successfully passing the training period, wage would increase to $35.09/hr.

Essential Functions

  • Coordinate and perform scheduled maintenance and controlled tests on wastewater treatment plant solids handling equipment including, centrifuge, volute press, conveyors, and a variety of pumps; assist with repairs.

  • Perform various Plant Operator duties, including operating and maintaining anaerobic digesters, methane gas systems, automated aeration systems, dissolved air flotation thickeners, boilers, and clarifiers.

  • Maintain and enter records into database; complete equipment checklists, monthly solids handling reports, etc.; process control sheets and microscope examination logs; fill out incident reports and work orders.

  • Perform process control sampling and testing; notify supervisor of abnormal readings, problems, or concerns.

  • Monitor dewatering processes utilizing SCADA System, equipment, and control panels.

  • Order and maintain polymer inventory.

  • Operate a variety of light to heavy equipment, such as: forklifts, dump trucks, back hoes, etc.

  • Perform other duties, as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of wastewater treatment principles and practices, including wastewater treatment plant operations, and monitoring plant equipment.

  • Knowledge of and ability to promote and interpret safe work practices and ensure compliance with City and department safety policies, and OSHA standards and guidelines.

  • Skill in utilizing various computer software and databases, including Microsoft 365, and the ability to learn job-specific applications and equipment.

  • Skill in following oral and written instructions, policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.

  • Skill in managing multiple projects with shifting priorities and timeline demands.

  • Skill in organization, time management and prioritizing with the proven ability to have keen attention to detail and accuracy in performing work with adherence to strict deadlines.

  • Skill in communicating, in person and writing, with the proven ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse individuals.

  • Ability to operate small power equipment, hand tools, and light to heavy equipment in a safe and effective manner, including microscopes, centrifuges, drying ovens, and various meters.

  • Ability to maintain current knowledge, developments, and trends related to specific area of focus and/or assigned projects.

  • Ability to maintain and exhibit integrity and discretion in handling the confidential and sensitive information.

  • Ability to maintain and foster a culture of professionalism, adhere to departmental and City standards and specifications, and support a positive team environment.

  • Ability to resolve conflicts with facilitating outcomes while maintaining a calm demeanor.

  • Ability to learn City and departmental policies, procedures, and practices, including Missoula Municipal Code, and other state and federal regulations related to water quality, sewer, and wastewater treatment.

Working Conditions:

  • Position requires the ability to lift and maneuver 55 lbs. or less.

  • Work environment may include exposure to unavoidable weather conditions, occupational hazards, chemicals, biohazards, construction hazards, and physical risks, including working in confined spaces or high traffic areas, which require following basic safety precautions.

  • Duties may require the use of fixed and portable ladders to gain access to roofs or entering tanks and basins.

Qualifications and Additional Application Materials

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to two (2) years wastewater treatment plant operation experience, or another relevant field.

  • Must have a valid Montana driver’s license with a verified acceptable driving record, or the ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.

  • Ability to obtain a Montana Class 1 Wastewater Treatment Operator certification within 6 months.
