I. Job Summary

The Lead Landfill Technician utilizes advanced knowledge and skill-set to properly dispose of solid waste materials at landfill site. Ensures accurate diagnosis and effective repair and/or replacement of vehicle and equipment components. Provides guidance and training and assistance to other Technicians, as directed by the Fleet manager.

II. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other minor duties may be assigned.

  • Operates heavy equipment such as bulldozer, front-end loader, and compactor, to excavate landfill site, transport solid waste materials, and to spread and compact layers of waste and earth cover.

  • Directs incoming vehicles to dumping area.

  • Examines cargo to prohibit disposal of caustic waste, according to government regulations.

  • Sprays poisons and other specified chemicals over waste material to control disease carrying pests.

  • Drives truck to distribute oil or water over landfill to control dust.

  • Weighs or coordinates the weighing vehicles entering and leaving site and collects dumping fees.

  • May provide assistance and direction to less experienced landfill technicians.

  • Ensures compliance with all fleet processes (e.g. parts ordering, scheduling, fleet prides, warranty capture)

  • Makes recommendations regarding scheduling and assigned tasks in accordance with business needs

  • May be required to Lead safety meetings

  • Assists with monitoring required WMU training for other Technicians to ensure compliance

  • Provide estimates on time and material costs for repairs and new parts.

  • Orders and receives parts and supplies, as needed.

  • Performs proficient inspection, diagnosis and moderately complex repair of assigned vehicles and equipment

  • Inspects the quality of outside/supplier repairs and or rebuilds. Assesses structural damage and assigns needed repairs utilizing the most appropriate method(s).

  • Performs service calls for emergency breakdowns.

  • Conducts safety checks on vehicles. Performs maintenance related work, as required.

  • Prioritize repairs / deficiencies, makes immediate decisions regarding out of service status, and determines repair priorities.

  • Ability to ensure and enforce all shop related safety protocol, (administer) – Follow and reinforce with others all safety processes and protocols.

IV. Qualifications

A. Education and Experience

  • Education: None Required

  • Experience: 4 years of relevant work experience

B. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations or Other Requirements

  • A minimum age requirement of 21 years is required for CDL Driving positions that accept hazardous waste.

C. Other Knowledge, Skills or Abilities Required

  • Skill in operating tools equipment, parts and procedures utilized during the repair and servicing of vehicles and equipment

  • Skill in repair of special purpose equipment, ability to effectively communicate needed repairs or tasks

  • A desire to have a career path leading to a management position would be ideal.

  • Ability to effectively communicate with technicians and supervisors.

  • Must possess sound decision making abilities and be capable of prioritizing work load.
