Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking an Ombudsperson for the Provost & EVC for Academic Affairs department. The Ombudsperson represents a neutral, independent, knowledgeable, confidential, and non-binding resource for students seeking to address and resolve their most grievous concerns in a timely and appropriate manner, outside of formal university processes.Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Services provided by the Office of the Ombudsperson include consultation, referrals, explanations of policies and procedures, review of applicable resolution methods, and other services.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality to the extent feasible and lawful and is committed to inclusion, fairness and equity.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • A minimum of a master's degree in higher education administration, student affairs, counseling, a competitive academic discipline or a closely related field.
  • At least five years relevant professional experience in a role of increasing responsibility that includes advising, counseling, and resolving postsecondary student academic/ administrative issues.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Outstanding written and oral communications skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, particularly the ability to listen and excellent problem-solving skills.
  • The ability to gather and analyze information.
  • Participation as a member of the International Ombudsman Association, attending regular conferences and meetings.
Preferred Qualifications
  • A J.D. or Ph.D. in a related discipline, and a detailed understanding and thorough working knowledge of Rutgers-New Brunswick's organizational structure and functioning, academic and student life offerings, regulations, policies, and procedures, and/or experience as an ombudsperson within a higher education institution.
