Apply today to become a member of the Environmental Graphics Design Team in the Office of Facilities/Architecture. Facilities supports the overall mission of WMATA to provide safe, reliable and efficient Metrorail transportation throughout the DC Metro area by providing design and project management services for WMATA facilities and infrastructure renewal and new construction tasks. A successful candidate will be pursuing a degree in Graphic Design, Architecture, or related field of study, and will contribute to the Authority's Digital and Static Signage and Wayfinding Program. This position reports to the Environmental Graphic Design Manager.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design, Architecture, Fine Arts or a related field of study

  • In lieu of a Bachelor's degree, a two year degree in Graphic Design, Architecture, Fine Arts or related field of study or two years of relevant formal training, plus two (2) years of relevant experience, in addition to the experience stated below, will be considered

Experience

  • A minimum of five (5) years of demonstrated, progressively responsible graphics design experience

Certification/Licensure

  • N/A

Preferred

  • Experience working with a graphic design or architectural firm

SUMMARY

The Environmental Graphics Design (EGD) Specialist works within the ARCH department¿s ¿signage¿ scope - addressing Metrorail¿s wayfinding, customer information, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Roadway safety requirements. The incumbent conducts site surveys, signage inventory reporting, production-ready artwork file creation in support of maintenance activities, new signage strategy collaboration for Capital Improvement Projects, and signage compliance implementation required for safety and ADA accessibility. Supports large-scope signage improvement presentations and proposal on occasion. The EGD Specialist participates in all project phases including survey and assessment of existing signage conditions; preparation of signage and environmental graphic design packages and provides guidance for design performed by others.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Designs layout for Metrorail System signage, utilizing industry standard graphics software and ensures that files are accessible and editable for future iterations and reproduction.

  • Produces 2D and 3D illustrations, as well as, high-end presentation graphics for concept development and briefing materials, to convey the vision of new design element proposals and serve as a visual communication tool to seek approval from governing committees and evaluate potential impacts on localized environmental factors.

  • Executes file preparation and formatting for production, including file output selection, color correction, font verification, and fabrication specifications to avoid print errors or default settings that are inconsistent with original design criteria

  • Maintains database of sketches, working drafts, revisions, and final production files for networked project folders and archives to be able to track tasks, source past materials for maintenance, improve design consistency, and share files for collaborative design efforts.

  • Performs site surveys in support of signage project tasks, including replacement of existing signage as well as installation of new signage to meet safety and accessibility requirements.

  • Creates photo referencing and composite rendering for signage placement plans to supplement placement diagrams and offer elevation views of signage plans that will provide a visual simulation to signage requestors, in advance of submitting project files for production, as well as, provide guidance to installers after fabrication. ¿¿¿¿¿¿¿
