General Scope of Duties
Develop and implement workflows for collection, acquisition and resource sharing activities for library materials in all formats. Manage the lifecycle of electronic resources, including negotiations, trials, ordering, provision of access, payment, assessment, renewals and deaccession. Activate and authenticate electronic resources, and troubleshoot issues. Oversee acquisition of physical materials and one-time purchases. In collaboration with the Director of Library Collections, Access & Discovery, develop and oversee the collections budget. In collaboration with systems and research support colleagues, contribute to decisions regarding the online discovery system. Oversee resource sharing activities, including working with consortial partners, and incorporate resource sharing into overall collection practices. Manage two full-time staff members responsible for acquisitions and interlibrary loan.
General Duties and Responsibilities
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
In collaboration with the Director of Library Collections, Access & Discovery, develop and implement an ongoing strategy to curate the library’s collections in all available formats, making data-informed decisions that equitably support the curriculum of the College.
Manage the lifecycle of, and workflows for, the library’s electronic collections, including researching new resources; tracking and responding to requests; overseeing trials; setting up access using the library’s authentication system; troubleshooting and resolving access issues; arranging payments; monitoring annual expenditures; maintaining licensing and administrative credentials; evaluating resources; and renewing licenses.
Supervise the work and professional development of two staff members responsible for purchasing/acquisitions and interlibrary loan. Build a cohesive collections team around subscription resources, one-time acquisitions, on-demand/token access, and resource sharing.
Oversee the acquisition of physical materials and one-time purchases. Work with acquisitions and other library staff members to make collection decisions. Provide oversight for the small print serials collection. Incorporate physical materials, print serials and one-time purchases into budget planning.
In collaboration with the Director of Library Collections, Access & Discovery, develop annual budget projections and spending plans for the library collection. Coordinate with campus stakeholders, including research support librarians and faculty members, to make decisions.
Evaluate and pursue user-driven acquisition agreements, transformative (read/publish) agreements and open access initiatives to support collection sustainability. Work with faculty stakeholders and the Director of Library Collections, Access & Discovery to make and evaluate decisions regarding open access agreements and article processing charges.
Oversee resource sharing activities, including the development and implementation of policies. Incorporate resource sharing into overall collection and acquisition activities. Work with Access Services staff and students to coordinate workflows.
Provide and analyze collection data, utilizing the SUSHI protocol and other analytics tools. Generate data for physical and electronic resources as well as resource sharing materials. Coordinate with the Director of Library Collections, Access & Discovery to incorporate these data into decision making.
Establish and maintain relationships with vendors. In concert with the Director of Library Collections, Access & Discovery, negotiate with vendors to obtain optimal pricing and access to resources.
Secondary Duties and Responsibilities:
In collaboration with systems and research support librarians, contribute to decisions regarding the front-end user interface systems to support optimal user discovery of library materials.
Participate as a member of consortial groups related to collections, electronic resources, resource sharing and discovery systems.
Collaborate with Library Collections, Access & Discovery staff to maintain, enhance and document workflows in the integrated library system.
In collaboration with the Director of Library Collections, Access & Discovery, as well as Collections, Technical Services and Access Services staff, plan and support collection management projects, such as withdrawal and shifting initiatives.
Tertiary Duties and Responsibilities:
Engage in professional development activities related to collection development, electronic resources, acquisitions and/or resource sharing.
Participate in the library profession, particularly with the Boston Library Consortium (the library’s primary consortial partner), as well as contributing to Oberlin Group discussions and projects as appropriate, as well as other relevant organizations and partners.
●Engage in service opportunities to Connecticut College, such as committees and task forces, as appropriate.
Education and Skills
Master’s degree in library and information science, or a master’s degree in a relevant discipline.
At least five years’ experience working in an academic library, with at least three years’ experience working in library collections (e.g., electronic resources, acquisitions or cataloging/resource management).
Experience or familiarity with standards for acquisitions, access and use of electronic resources.
Experience or familiarity with linking technology, authentication protocols and link resolvers.
Excellent budgeting, analytical and problem-solving skills.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Familiarity with interlibrary loan and resource sharing processes, and the ways in which resource sharing is aligned with overall collection management, is highly desirable.
Knowledge of standard office software (word processing, spreadsheets, presentations). Knowledge of additional technological tools, such as relational databases, statistical analysis tools and/or data visualization tools, is highly desirable.
Experience with integrated library systems. Familiarity with the Alma/Primo system is highly desirable.
