Description

The City of Norfolk's Department of Libraries is currently seeking a Library Assistant II for its Collection Development Division. This position assists with the daily operations of the library by managing the flow of materials, performing administrative duties including typing and filing. providing customer service to patrons and colleagues.

The mission of collection management is to identify, evaluate, select, organize and maintain high-quality information resources, in a wide variety of formats, to meet the needs of our diverse community for life-long learning, cultural enrichment, intellectual stimulation and recreation in support of the mission and vision statements of the Norfolk Public Library and the City of Norfolk. The Library strives to create a "City of Readers", where all citizens are literate, techno-literate, productive and contribute to and enjoy a high quality of life.

Departmental Hiring Salary: $19.69 Hourly

Essential Functions

Essential functions include but are not limited to:

  • Serves patrons at various branch library locations as needed checking out materials, shelving, taking payments for fines and fees, answering questions, and providing reading recommendations.

  • Assists with the selection of library materials by searching bibliographic records, reading reviews, online resources, and compiling selection lists.

  • Reviews and compiles library materials usage data into spreadsheets.

  • Assists library patrons with their accounts, primarily by email and telephone.

  • Follows oral and written instructions.

  • Operates office equipment such as a computer, copier, scanner, printer and a facsimile machine.

  • Assists in creating and updating collection development procedures.

  • Performs assigned duties as instructed.

  • Must be able to sit and stand for extended periods of time; see identification numbers on materials; lift from ground to above shoulder; lift, shift and sort boxes of books and AV materials push and pull loaded book carts; bend and stoop; reach shelves from floor level to approximately 6 feet in height using a step stool in narrow aisles and perform tasks requiring manual dexterity.

  • Work requires employees to stand for extended periods of time, bend, reach, and lift materials weighing up to 50 lbs.

Education/Experience

Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with six months/one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency. Junior college, vocational, business, technical or correspondence schools are likely sources. Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training.

One year of experience in library or related customer service work.

Additional Information & Requirements

Work Hours: 20 hrs.; Monday- Friday; 8:30am-12:30pm

  • Retirement

    If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

    If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

  • The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
