Minimum Qualifications:
7 years professional experience in a closely-related biological field or laboratory program is required.
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one of the physical or natural sciences or mathematics and three years of professional experience in one of the physical or natural sciences or mathematics; or
A master's degree from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one of the physical or natural sciences or mathematics and two years of professional experience as described above; or
A doctorate from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one of the physical or natural sciences or mathematics can substitute for the required experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
Preference may be given to individuals with experience working with large data sets, especially passive acoustic telemetry data from multiple sources, and data analyses in support of fisheries ecology. Experience with the use of geostatistics in analyzing spatially-autocorrelated data, Bayesian analytical methodologies, or spatially explicit population models is desirable. Experience conducting surgeries to internally implant acoustic tags is also desirable.

Position Overview and Responsibilities:
This position is with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI), Marine Fisheries Research, Fisheries-Independent Monitoring Program. This position is funded by an existing grant and is fully funded for 2 years from the successful applicant’s start date, subject to satisfactory job performance. This is an OPS (Other Personal Service) position. It offers no moving expenses. Occasional overtime hours may occur. Hours worked over 40 per week, Friday to Thursday, are considered overtime and are paid at 1.5 times the regular wage.
Primary duties for this position are to lead and assist with analyses associated with multiple acoustic telemetry projects to better understand Florida’s endangered Smalltooth Sawfish population. In doing so, the successful applicant will use statistically rigorous methods to integrate data from a variety of sources to improve our understanding of ecology, habitat use, and movement patterns of Smalltooth Sawfish. It is anticipated that project results will lead to completion of multiple peer-reviewed publications, of which the successful applicant will be the lead author or coauthor. In addition, the successful applicant will be expected to participate in field work related to ongoing projects and prepare reports for grant agencies, fishery managers and other scientists, present analytical results, and represent the institute at meetings and conferences related to fisheries research and always represent the Agency in a courteous and professional manner. The successful applicant may also assist in the development of proposals as needed. The successful applicant will be expected to work as part of a team, especially in the field, and must also be able to work independently in the lab. The successful applicant will be based at the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute, Charlotte Harbor Field Laboratory, in Port Charlotte, FL, and may require travel to other regions of Florida as needed.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of fisheries research and monitoring programs and how they support fisheries ecology, management, and stock assessments. Knowledge of passive acoustic telemetry, including data sharing networks. Familiarity with principles of statistical design, including the application of univariate and multivariate statistical models. Ability to conduct complex data analyses, integrating data from multiple disciplines (e.g., habitat, population abundance, physical oceanography, life history) using statistical software such as R and modeling software.
