Agricultural Climate Resilience Specialist Available Title(s): 516M-YNCSNPS - Natural Resource Scientist 3 Business Title: Agricultural Climate Resilience Specialist Employee Type: Classified Time Type: Part time Position Term: 12 Month Position Details: Summary of Duties: The individual in this position will serve as a program leader for research that improves climate preparedness across the region's diverse, natural resource-dependent agricultural systems, working to apply and/or develop techniques where precedents are limited and objectives and scope are only broadly defined. This includes, but is not limited to, work in the area of water for multiple purposes (e.g. for agricultural, domestic, and instream purposes), and work to integrate climate considerations into domain-specific knowledge to support climate risk reduction for agriculture. The researcher will consult with, and develop ongoing relationships with, a wide range of internal and external stakeholder clientele, including underserved communities, to further determine and define needs, and define goals and objectives. They will then strategically plan, acquire extramural funding, and lead projects in this area, collaborating with other faculty across WSU, regional universities, state and federal agencies, and beyond to develop research and extension projects that meet those needs, including defining data collection, data management, and synthesis/analyses procedures. They will analyze and apply related research work conducted by others in the field of agriculture and natural resources management in the context of a changing climate, including technical modeling-based research project results, information on uncertainty and other technical materials. They will also hire, train, and supervise project personnel in data collection, data management, extension/communications product development, and reporting procedures. Formulate and justify conclusions and recommendations for a variety of diverse stakeholder groups, developing a range of appropriate communications products such as scientific publications, Extension publications, curriculum and other materials in a variety of traditional and non-traditional formats. Provide consultations as needed to resource managers, including on their own and others' current work. Develop and define methods to document impact and inform continual refinement of the work over-time. Perform other work as required. Program Leadership | 25% Lead research and extension that improves regional and national climate resilience for natural resource dependent agricultural systems, including working to define needs, goals, and objectives, and then strategically developing extramurally funded research and extension projects to meet those needs over time. Collaborate with other faculty across WSU, the region, and beyond to design and develop research and extension projects, and analyze and apply related research work conducted by others, so as to bring value to diverse external stakeholders. Grants and Contracts | 15% Acquire extramural funding to support ongoing work in the area of climate preparedness for natural resource-dependent agricultural systems. Cultivate and maintain strategic and collaborative relationships with funders and funding agencies.
