Bureau of Land Management Environmental Protection Specialist in Rawlins, Wyoming

Responsibilities Conducts research and gathers and maintains environmental data relating to mitigation of surface impacts and restoration of surfaces to a productive condition. Record research of inactive wells abandoned locations, and access roads to verify locations of responsible operator/lessees. Coordinates and participates in inspections to identify sites needing additional work to achieve adequate restoration. Arranges and participates in the inspection of locations for proposed operator and corporate production actions to determine the potential impacts of the operations. Makes recommendations on implementation of mitigating measures to reduce the impacts. Conducts field inspections of hazardous material and oil and gas drilling and production operations to determine compliance with environmental requirements of approved plans and conditions of approvals. For GS-07: You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: Must have the ability to use automated equipment for word processing, database input and workload tracking. Ability to read topographic maps and use GIS/GPS. Operate four-wheel drive vehicles on and off road. Must have the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Must have a working knowledge and practical experience in the application of physical and resource sciences, which may include biology, ecology, chemistry, geology, hydrology, soils, range conservation, and wildlife. Basic knowledge of natural resource and environmental protection and analysis concepts, principles, and procedures. Must have the skills to interpret and apply findings, develop recommendations, and document those recommendations in a report or in a legal document. Must have the ability to search legal and related source documents for information. -OR- Education: 1 full year of graduate level education in a related field. -OR- Superior Academic Achievement (See OPM's General Policies, Application of Qualification Standards Section 4.f.) Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. Physical Demands: The employee in this position performs work in an office setting, however, considerable field work is required to gather data, conduct evaluations and meet with industry operators. The individual may be required to walk or ride vehicles over rough terrain, perform duties that require reoccurring bending, crouching, stooping, reaching, or lifting. Work may also include lifting of moderately heavy items, such as equipment and samples. Work Environment: The incumbent works in an office setting, however, field work is required to complete projects. The employee may be exposed to discomfort from harsh weather. The incumbent may be subjected to hostile wildlife, chemical and physical hazards.
